Responsibilities

The role of a Tribal Public Health Communications & Data Specialist is a dynamic and impactful position that blends strategic communication with data-driven public health initiatives—specifically tailored to serve Tribal communities
The role will serve as the primary data liaison, providing administrative and programmatic support in close coordination with the SRST Tribal Public Health Authority and Great Plains Epidemiology Center. Interagency Collaboration, working with Tribal governments, Indian Health Service (IHS), and other federal/state agencies to align health strategies
The specialist will work to establish and maintain SRST Public Health Data, retrieve, analyze and SRST Public Health Data & vital health information from North Dakota & South Dakota Department of Health and incorporating various state dashboards to keep the community, programs, HEW, Tribal Leadership up to date on current health issues
Utilizing this data, the specialist will monitor health trends national, state, reservation, and local levels, ensuring the Tribal Public Health Authority, Tribal Leadership is informed and the community is engaged in key health topics
Responsible for developing innovative methods to communicate health issues effectively, keeping tribal leadership up to date & empowering communicates with relevant health information
Provide administrative and programmatic support to the SRST Tribal Health Department, programmatic support in close collaboration with the Public Health Authority, Indian Health Services & GPTEC
Monthly Reports
Develop culturally relevant health campaigns and educational materials that resonate with Tribal populations
Plan, develop, implement & evaluate strategic messaging initiatives that align with public health objectives
Coordinate and provide marketing and communication expertise in the creation of printed and digital publications, websites, mobile applications, and presentations
Develop innovative approaches to educating the community on key health topics, ensuring clarity and accessibility
Foster trust and collaboration with Tribal leaders, elders, and community members to promote health initiatives
Collect, analyze, and interpret health data to inform policy, track outcomes, and support grant reporting
Coordinate responses during public health emergencies (e.g., pandemics, natural disasters) with clear, timely messaging
Perform other duties as assigned

Required

A minimum of three years of experience in developing communication plans from the ground up for rural and Indigenous communities is required
Experience working within Tribal health systems, under P.L. 93-638, or with Indigenous communities is highly valued
The candidate must possess strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
Proficiency in data tools such as Excel, GIS, SPSS, and familiarity with various social media platforms is essential
Strong analytical skills and a genuine passion for public health education are required
Must possess a valid driver's license and meet insurability guidelines
Demonstrate effective knowledge of automated health record systems and software programs of Medical System, RPMS (Resource Patient Management System), EHR (Electronic Health Record), and Patient Care Component/PCC forms)
Demonstrate effective knowledge of medical technology
Sign confidentially statement and HIPAA and Privacy Act with understanding of penalties and violations; non-disclosure of private and protected health information unless required to do so in an official capacity and/or job function
Ability to multitask with continuous improvement mindset, desire to learn, take on incremental responsivity, and work in a team environment

Preferred

A Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Communications, Marketing, Data Science, or a related field is preferred
The ideal candidate is a creative thinker capable of generating innovative communication strategies
Proficiency in digital marketing, publication development, and the creation of multimedia content is expected
A deep understanding of Tribal sovereignty, cultural protocols, and the dynamics of Indigenous communities is essential
