Sr. Chassis Steering Systems Engineer
Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is seeking a Senior Chassis Engineer with extensive automotive design experience to lead the development of power steering systems for U.S. pickup trucks and off-road vehicles. The role involves end-to-end design, analysis, and validation of hydraulic and electronic power steering subsystems, ensuring compliance with safety standards and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
Automotive
Responsibilities
Lead the concept, architecture, and detail design of hydraulic and electric power steering systems (including pumps, valves, racks, columns, motors, and actuators) for pickup trucks and off-road vehicles
Create and refine complex 3D models and assemblies in CATIA V5
Define steering system requirements (steering effort, feedback, kinematics, durability, NVH, etc.) and perform engineering analysis
Plan and execute prototype development and testing
Ensure all steering designs comply with relevant FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) and SAE regulations
Work closely with electrical engineers, vehicle dynamics experts, suspension and brake teams, manufacturing, and quality assurance to integrate the steering system into the overall vehicle
Interface with Tier-1 suppliers of steering components
Prepare and maintain engineering documentation, including system design specifications, component drawings, bills of materials (BOM), DFMEA/FMEA, DFSS documentation, and validation test reports
Mentor and guide junior engineers on the team
Stay current with advances in steering technology and propose and implement design improvements for weight reduction, cost efficiency, and performance enhancements
Qualification
Required
8–10 years of hands-on automotive design experience
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field
Professional experience in chassis and suspension design, with a focus on Power Steering Systems
Deep knowledge of chassis integration, vehicle dynamics, and safety standards
Proactive, technically rigorous engineer who can ensure steering systems meet performance, durability, and regulatory requirements (e.g., FMVSS and SAE)
Demonstrate leadership potential—either through previous mentorship or a strong interest in leading technical projects
Eager to collaborate within a multidisciplinary team
Create and refine complex 3D models and assemblies in CATIA V5
Define steering system requirements (steering effort, feedback, kinematics, durability, NVH, etc.) and perform engineering analysis
Plan and execute prototype development and testing
Ensure all steering designs comply with relevant FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) and SAE regulations
Work closely with electrical engineers, vehicle dynamics experts, suspension and brake teams, manufacturing, and quality assurance

Mentor and guide junior engineers on the team
Stay current with advances in steering technology and automotive engineering practices
Occasional domestic and international travel (approximately 20%) to our Korean HQ, supplier facilities, chassis component manufacturers, and CA test tracks
Preferred
Experience specifically with pickup trucks, SUVs, or off-road vehicles is highly preferred
Experience working on electric or hybrid vehicle Steering systems
Familiarity with variable-assist steering mechanisms (hydraulic flow controls or adaptive electronic steering algorithms) and experience tuning them
Hands-on knowledge of steering dampers and their role in ride/handling is desirable
Proficiency in CAE tools (e.g. ANSYS, Nastran, MATLAB/Simulink) for advanced suspension modeling, dynamic simulations, or optimization is a plus
In-depth understanding of vehicle ride & handling, off-road performance, and NVH considerations specific to heavy-duty trucks and SUVs
Knowledge of solid axle and independent suspension systems in off-road conditions
Familiarity with CAD software (e.g. CATIA V6) and PDM (ENOVIA V6) or Windchill PLM systems
Professional Engineer (PE) license or Six Sigma certification, if applicable, are advantageous
