Responsibilities
The Cybersecurity and Automation Engineer plays a critical role in protecting the organization's digital assets while driving automation initiatives that enhance efficiency and operational performance
This position serves as a bridge between cybersecurity operations and intelligent process automation, ensuring that the organization remains secure, resilient, and forward-thinking
The role is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and improving cybersecurity controls; supporting identity and access management standards; coordinating risk, compliance, and disaster recovery activities; and developing automated or AI-enabled solutions that streamline workflows across clinical, operational, and business environments
As the organization evolves, this position will balance daily security responsibilities with long-term automation and innovation efforts to strengthen both protection and productivity
Helps define and maintain cybersecurity and automation standards for the organization
Provides guidance to team members regarding daily, weekly, and monthly cybersecurity tasks and audits
Collaborates with IS leadership to ensure adherence to cybersecurity policies, monitoring tasks, and best practices
Assists in evaluating and recommending new cybersecurity technologies and automation platforms
Acts as a security and automation subject-matter resource to technical and non-technical teams
Ability to lead project teams or groups of users towards a common objective
Demonstrates initiative and responsibility to develop personal, leadership and professional goals/objectives and determines methods to meet these goals and objectives

Shares responsibility for delivering cybersecurity education during new hire orientation and ongoing staff education
Helps champion a culture of cybersecurity awareness
Clearly communicates cybersecurity risks, incidents, and required actions to leadership and end-users
Prepares and distributes communications for monthly patching schedules, phishing exercises, DR test coordination, and system updates
Converts complex technical concepts into clear, actionable information for non-technical audiences
Demonstrated exceptional written and oral communication skills
Maintains awareness of verbal / non-verbal communication in interactions with staff, other departments, customers, physicians, patients and families
Collaborates and communicates effectively and positively with all members of the WCH health care team
Design, implement, and maintain cybersecurity solutions to protect critical systems, data, and identities
Coordinates with the Information Technology team to configure, deploy, maintain, monitors and supports the organization’s cybersecurity tools, including Sophos MDR, Agile Blue, NinjaOne, Proofpoint, Zix, Halcyon, and others
Reviews all daily, weekly, and monthly cybersecurity tasks for completion and accuracy, ensuring the cybersecurity program is consistently followed
Conducts monthly phishing simulations and tracks organizational performance, providing recommendations as needed
Coordinates monthly patch management activities, including scheduling, communication, and validation
Supports identity and access management by defining standards, improving workflows, and maintaining role-based access models (while team members execute account provisioning)
Manage privileged access reviews or support PAM initiatives
Assist in maintaining incident response playbooks
Coordinates third-party penetration tests and participates in internal validation exercises
Supports and coordinates disaster recovery testing and documentation, ensuring lessons learned are captured and improvements implemented
Evaluates new cybersecurity products and recommends solutions to improve organizational resilience
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify automation opportunities within IT and security environments
Designs and implements automation solutions to reduce manual work across departments using tools such as Python, Power Automate, UiPath, or equivalent
Assists in evaluating and standardizing enterprise AI and automation platforms (e.g., organizational GPTs, copilots, or similar)
Maintains awareness of emerging threats and cybersecurity best practices to proactively enhance defenses
Support incident response and post-incident review activities with root cause analysis and recommendations for improvement
Provides timely and courteous support to staff regarding cybersecurity incidents, questions, or access-related issues
Partners with departments to identify automation opportunities that improve workflows and reduce operational burden
Collaborate with clinical, business, and administrative teams to ensure automation solutions meet organizational needs

Assess customer satisfaction when rounding on customers/users and use appropriate chain of command for unresolved issues or problems

Pursues ongoing training in both cybersecurity and automation/AI platforms

Identifies own learning needs, develops and implements a plan to address those needs
Seeks guidance/input from peers, supervisor and direct reports, as necessary, to identify areas for growth
Identifies opportunities to strengthen cybersecurity posture and communicates recommendations to IS leadership
Works with team members to implement improvements to security processes, workflows, or technologies
Evaluates the effectiveness of cybersecurity and automation initiatives and recommends enhancements
Develops and maintains an ongoing understanding of industry best practices related to cybersecurity, identity/access management, automation, and AI
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience)
3+ years of experience in cybersecurity, systems engineering, automation, or related IT fields
Hands-on experience with cybersecurity tools such as Sophos MDR, Agile Blue, Active Directory, Entra, Office 365, Proofpoint, Zix and endpoint protection systems
Working knowledge of IAM principles, role-based access, and access lifecycle processes
Strong scripting or automation skills (e.g., MoveIT, Power Automate, Python, UiPath, or similar)
Familiarity with cybersecurity frameworks (NIST CSF, CIS Controls, HIPAA Security Rule)
Experience with logging, monitoring, or SIEM tools
Understanding of basic cloud security (Azure preferred)
Understanding of network fundamentals, security best practices, and threat detection concepts
Ability to manage multiple priorities, communicate effectively, and collaborate across technical and non-technical teams
Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or ability to obtain within 2 years of hire
Preferred
CompTIA Security+, CySA+, Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) or equivalent certifications
Experience with vulnerability management, penetration testing coordination, and disaster recovery exercises
Experience with automation in healthcare or other regulated industries
Knowledge of emerging AI tools, enterprise AI platforms, and opportunities to improve organizational workflow efficiency
Strong analytical mindset with a continuous improvement approach
