American Waste Systems Inc. is a long-standing family business in Kansas City operating in multiple service divisions. They are seeking a hands-on Controller responsible for financial oversight, day-to-day accounting, forecasting, and managing a small office team to ensure accuracy and strong internal controls.

Responsibilities

Full-cycle accounting including AP, AR, payroll review, bank reconciliation, and month-end closing
Create and maintain cash flow forecasts, revenue projections, and financial dashboards
Manage daily, weekly, and monthly financial reporting for leadership
Maintain and enforce accounting policies, internal controls, and consistent documentation
Oversee equipment, vendor, and job-cost tracking
Reconcile multiple revenue streams across three business divisions
Prepare financial statements for leadership review
Assist ownership with budgeting and annual planning
Track key KPIs: job margins, labor costs, equipment ROI, event profitability, route efficiency
Build simple but effective analytical reports for decision-making
Identify cost-saving opportunities and process improvements
Supervise and develop a team of 4–5 office staff (billing, dispatch admin, customer service, AP/AR)
Reassign workload and improve efficiency across the office
Lead weekly admin/operations check-ins
Ensure accurate documentation, customer records, and compliance requirements
Support operational managers with numbers, reporting, and scheduling insights
Improve workflows in QuickBooks, routing/dispatch software, and internal spreadsheets
Strengthen onboarding systems for office staff
Work with leadership on modernizing financial operations
Build templates, SOPs, and checklists for consistent execution

Required

3+ years of experience in accounting, financial management, or controller-level duties
Proficiency in QuickBooks (Desktop or Online)
Strong Excel / Google Sheets skills
Experience with forecasting, reconciliation, and cash flow reporting
Ability to supervise and coach a small team
Excellent organizational and communication skills
High accuracy and attention to detail

Preferred

Experience in construction, waste management, field service, events, or transportation industries
Job-costing or multi-division accounting experience
Experience implementing processes or SOPs
Comfort working in a fast-paced, operational business
