Director of Human Resources
Associated General Contractors of America is seeking a Director of Human Resources to lead and manage their HR function as a strategic partner. The role involves overseeing recruitment, employee relations, compliance, and performance management while ensuring alignment with organizational goals and ethical practices.
Responsibilities
Leads full-cycle recruitment and staffing strategies, including job postings, talent sourcing, external advertising, and partnerships with search firms
Oversees applicant screening and initial interview processes, ensuring consistent and legally compliant hiring practices
Administers onboarding and orientation for new hires and manages the offboarding and exit interview process
Conducts workforce planning assessments, including staffing needs, turnover analysis, and succession planning, and leadership pipeline development considerations
Conducts comparative compensation and benefits benchmarking to inform competitive and equitable pay practices
Reviews, evaluates, and implements employee benefits programs, ensuring alignment with organizational needs and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
Administers AGC’s benefits portfolio, including health, life, disability, flexible spending accounts, HSA programs, supplemental insurance, and workers’ compensation
Supports the administration of AGC’s 401(k) and 457 retirement plans, including compliance, reporting, and employee education
Assists with payroll administration to ensure accurate and timely processing
Develops, updates, and maintains standardized job descriptions aligned with actual job duties and organizational structure
Develops, implements, and maintains AGC’s performance management and employee feedback processes
Maintains and updates AGC’s Employee Manual, reflecting current policies, benefits, and regulatory requirements for multi-state compliance
Maintains and updates the HR SharePoint site to ensure employees have access to accurate, up-to-date HR information and resources
Develops and maintains HR key performance indicators (KPIs) and dashboards to track recruitment, retention, engagement, and other workforce metrics
Maintains HR data integrity and supports enterprise data governance efforts, including HR metrics, workforce analytics, and reporting to inform organizational decision-making
Provides guidance and coaching to employees and managers on HR policies, benefits, and employee-relations concerns
Serves as the primary coordinator for AGC’s grievance procedures, ensuring fair, timely, and confidential resolution of issues
Coordinates and champions employee engagement and wellness efforts, including social events, Workplace Wellbeing initiatives, and Monthly Staff Lunch & Learn sessions
Gathers and analyzes HR data and feedback to guide decision-making, training priorities, and continuous improvement initiatives
Assesses organizational training needs and coordinates internal and external employee development opportunities
Consults with leadership and staff to ensure HR policies and practices support organizational strategies and culture
Partners with the VP, Association Operations to support enterprise-wide initiatives and cross-departmental collaboration
Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws (e.g., FLSA, ADA, FMLA, EEO)
Maintains secure, accurate, and confidential personnel records and HR documentation
Upholds strict confidentiality and models ethical decision-making in all HR activities
Supports workforce contingency plans and emergency HR protocols
Supports enterprise risk management efforts related to employment practices, including proactive identification and mitigation of HR-related risks
Other job-related duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Development, or a related field a plus. Relevant professional experience will be considered in lieu of formal education
Minimum of 5 years of comprehensive human resources experience, with responsibility across the full employee lifecycle in a small to mid-sized organization
Demonstrated experience serving as a sole or lead HR professional, with the ability to independently manage all core HR functions, including recruitment, employee relations, benefits, payroll coordination, compliance, policies, and performance management
Strong working knowledge of HR best practices, employment law, and ethical standards
Ability to operate with independence, sound judgment, and accountability as the organization's primary HR resource
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build trust across the organization
Proven ability to advise leadership and staff on sensitive matters with professionalism and empathy
Highly organized, adaptable, and comfortable managing competing priorities in a dynamic nonprofit environment
Proficiency with HRIS platforms, payroll and benefits systems (Paylocity a plus), Microsoft Office Suite, and SharePoint or similar intranet tools
Commitment to confidentiality, fairness, and ethical decision-making
Preferred
SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR, or equivalent HR certification preferred
