Associate Scientist
The Public Health Institute (PHI) is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting health and well-being. The Associate Scientist will assist in conducting and disseminating high-quality research on alcohol consumption and related health disparities, working under the supervision of Principal Investigators.

Responsibilities
Demonstrate leadership, knowledge, and contribution to alcohol, tobacco, substance use and/or mental health research fields
Write scientific papers and reports, either independently or in collaboration with peers under the aegis of the Principal Investigators
Prepare human subjects and regulatory materials, including IRB submissions, amendments, and related compliance documentation in coordination with Principal Investigators
Conduct literature searches to identify new or related developments within the appropriate scientific fields and provide syntheses in support of manuscript development
Provide project coordination and research infrastructure support in coordination with Principal Investigators, including coordinating study meetings and documentation, supporting communication across study team members and collaborators, and maintaining organized project documentation and workflows
Participate actively and contribute at study team meetings and, if relevant, partner meetings
Support dissemination activities, including preparing conference abstracts, posters and presentations, and presenting study findings at conferences under the aegis of the Principal Investigators
Contribute to grant or contract applications, including background and significance, conceptual frameworks, specific aims, coordination of submission components and supporting materials, as appropriate
Participate actively in ARG’s intellectual/scientific life through presence and presentations in the weekly seminar, confabs, and other research-related seminars
Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required
Qualification
Required
Five years of relevant work experience in a research position
Ph.D. or equivalent degree in relevant discipline
Evidence of such contribution through authorship of at least five (5) peer reviewed research papers (single authorship or in collaboration with others); responsible participation in grant writing is Individuals with a Doctoral degree may have fewer published papers depending on how recently the degree was completed
Experience in and familiarity with qualitative analytic approaches AND/OR statistical techniques for large datasets; advanced qualitative analysis or statistics; research methods; and behavioral science theory
Knowledge of scientific alcohol, tobacco, and other substance use literature or of professional literature in own field
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Broad organizational, qualitative or quantitative, writing, and editing skills including familiarity with spreadsheets
Ability to think creatively and independently and function well on a research team
