Responsibilities
Develop rapport with death-sentenced clients
Investigate, draft, and present motions for post-conviction relief in state court
Litigate access to public records
Conduct evidentiary hearings in state circuit court
File and argue appeals in the Florida Supreme Court
File Petitions for Writs of Habeas Corpus in the federal district courts
Handle appeals in the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court
Work closely with investigators to clients’ friends and family members
Identify documents to collect
Review trial evidence
Work with experts to develop mitigation themes and challenge forensic evidence
Qualification
Required
Candidates must possess a commitment to the defense of death-sentenced individuals
Candidates must have excellent writing and oral advocacy skills
Candidates must have an ability to think creatively and strategically about capital litigation
Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skills
Candidates must be able to develop a rapport with people of different backgrounds
Candidates must be able to work independently and take initiative
Candidates must be capable of analyzing and communicating complex information
Candidates must be able to work well in teams
Candidates must be able to organize work and set priorities to meet critical state and federal court deadlines
This position may require travel
This position may require occasionally working beyond business hours, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays
