Responsibilities

Organizes the schedules, coordinates the activities, and manages events for a caseload of offenders to ensure the smooth operation of a housing unit
Assists offenders with individual and family problems, Individual Program Directives, scheduling, transition plans, parole plans, and institutional adjustment to help them to understand and change their behavior
Coordinates and manages unit offender programs to ensure compliance with department policies and institutional operations memoranda
Assign offenders to work assignments, and conduct monthly payroll
Investigate and process offender grievances
Conducts unit orientation and inmate interviews and completes documentation used to determine cell/room assignment, classification, program eligibility, and the priority for scheduling follow-on meetings with inmates
Serves as the staff representative for restrictive housing hearings, and for inmates charged with major rule infractions at disciplinary hearings to provide for the security of the unit, the safety of the staff and inmates, and the rehabilitation of the offenders
Performs general security functions as needed by the facility, including but not limited to cell/area searches, emergency response, and rounds
Performs the delegated Unit Case Manager and Housing Captain duties in their absence
Performs other work as assigned

Required

APPLICANT MUST BE A CURRENT PART-TIME OR FULL-TIME STUDENT (MINIMUM OF 6 CREDIT HOURS) IN UPCOMING SEMESTER OR IN THE IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING SEMESTER
Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply
By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program
Successful applicant(s) will be required to undergo a background investigation
Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of a drug screening

Preferred

Preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior
Preference may be given to South Dakota residents
Preference may be given to students of South Dakota institutions
