Traffic Systems Specialist II or III (Signal Crew)
The Texas Department of Transportation is seeking a Traffic Systems Specialist II or III to join their team. This role involves specialized electrical/electronic technical work related to traffic management/control systems, including installation, testing, and repair of various electronic devices and systems.

Responsibilities
Assists in monitoring the proper disposition and replacement of equipment
Coordinates preventive maintenance on equipment
Designs and reviews traffic signal, traffic data collection or illumination projects; makes recommendations
Inventories supplies and equipment in shop
Monitors and inspects contracted work sites
Analyzes and interprets schematics and wiring diagrams
Consults with Department personnel, manufacturers and vendors regarding equipment operation, design, installation, equipment failure, complex repairs or replacement recommendations
Drives/operates a bucket truck to install and repair electronic traffic control devices at various heights
Follows applicable safety procedures when working in an area where other utilities such as high voltage lines, gas lines, water and sewage lines and heavy traffic are located
Installs, troubleshoots and maintains hardware and software related to traffic systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems, land mobile radio communication systems or the Statewide Traffic Analysis and Reporting System
Performs complex electronic repairs and rewires systems; adjusts and reprograms equipment/systems and replaces controllers and other electronic devices
Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting or traffic data collection equipment
Tests, diagnoses and repairs traffic control, traffic data collection and communication systems, including cable, short haul modems, dial-up modems and multiplexing equipment
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Assembles, beta tests and evaluates new traffic management equipment including illumination controller assemblies and systems; makes recommendations to accept or return equipment
Coordinates with local district maintenance offices for traffic control, bucket truck and additional supplies and assistance
Develops and prepares written reports that provide feedback on systems including ease of installation and setup, status of inventory needs, any problems encountered or other issues
Ensures preventive maintenance is conducted
Ensures that hazardous materials are properly used and waste properly disposed
Qualification
Required
High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies
Traffic Systems Specialist II: 3 years construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic management, transportation engineering, design, traffic systems maintenance
Traffic Systems Specialist III: 4 years construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic management, transportation engineering, design, traffic systems maintenance
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle
Must have a Commercial Class 'A' Driver's License or have obtained a CDL 'A' License with 'N' endorsement, within 120 calendar days from date of employment
Considerable knowledge of Traffic engineering terminology and fundamentals
Considerable knowledge of The relationship of traffic control equipment to the operation of a traffic management system
Considerable knowledge of The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
Considerable knowledge of Fundamentals of electrical/electronics and design procedures
Considerable knowledge of Electrical inspection standards, codes and procedures
Considerable knowledge of Electrical/electronic troubleshooting and repair techniques
Proficient skill in Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints and maps
Proficient skill in Analyzing and organizing business and technical data
Proficient skill in Interpreting applicable information
Ability to Learn to troubleshoot automation problems and related systems and identify solutions
Ability to Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures
Extensive knowledge of The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
Extensive knowledge of Electrical inspection standards, codes and procedures
Extensive knowledge of Electrical/electronic troubleshooting and repair techniques
Extensive knowledge of Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
Ability to Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures
Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour

Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs

Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
Standing-prolonged periods of time
Pushing-using upper extremities to press against object with force to move in a direction
Pulling-using upper extremities to exert force moving objects in a sustained motion
Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
Grasping-applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm
Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
Close Visual Acuity-work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts
Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures
Visual-Acuity-operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment
This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions
To be selected for and continue employment in this position, the selected incumbent must maintain the security or integrity of the agency's critical infrastructure and will be subject to regular assessments of criminal history and/or reviewed for connections to foreign adversaries
