Senior Accountant - Contract Accounting

The Senior Accountant will be responsible for applying advanced accounting judgement to complex contractual arrangements and financial transactions, ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP and supporting accurate financial reporting across various programs and product lines.

Responsibilities

Lead the accounting analysis and application of ASC 606 revenue recognition, including identification of performance obligations, transfer of control assessments, measures of progress, contract modifications, and variable consideration
Prepare, review, and approve complex journal entries, including revenue recognition, contract assets and liabilities, warranty reserves, and other accruals requiring technical judgment
Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts related to contracts, unbilled receivables, deferred revenue, and cost recognition, ensuring timely and accurate close
Develop and maintain contract accounting memos and supporting documentation to substantiate accounting conclusions for audit, internal controls, and management review
Analyze contract structures, funding mechanisms, and cost profiles to ensure proper accounting treatment and alignment with contractual terms
Partner cross-functionally with Program Management, Finance, Contracts, and Legal to interpret contract language and assess accounting implications
Support external and internal audits, including preparation of audit schedules, responses to inquiries, and walkthroughs of accounting processes and controls
Contribute to monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities, including variance analysis, trend analysis, and explanation of financial results to management
Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, and reporting, including enhancements to contract asset tracking, revenue schedules, and close efficiency
Provide guidance and informal mentorship to junior accountants on technical accounting matters and best practices
Evaluate accounting implications of new or non-standard contract terms, including trade offset / industrial cooperation agreements, co-development arrangements, cost-share structures, warranties, and customer-funded activities
Assist in the development or refinement of accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls related to contract accounting
Support pricing, forecasting, and long-range planning efforts by providing insight into revenue recognition timing, cost behavior, and financial risks
Contribute to the implementation or optimization of ERP and reporting tools supporting contract accounting and financial reporting

Required

Typically requires a bachelor's or master's degree in accounting, finance or related discipline along with eight or more years of progressive experience in accounting with a bachelor's degree or six or more years of experience with a master's degree. Equivalent professional experience may be substituted in lieu of education
Exercises independent judgment in resolving complex accounting issues within established policy frameworks
Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly explain accounting conclusions to non-accounting stakeholders
Operates with a high degree of accuracy, accountability, and professionalism in a regulated, audit-intensive environment
Demonstrated advanced understanding of accounting theories, concepts, and principles, with broad application experience and a strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP
Demonstrated ability to lead workstreams, including organizing, prioritizing, and coordinating activities to meet project milestones and deadlines
Proven ability to identify issues, analyze and interpret complex data, and develop sound solutions
Proven ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally, including documenting and presenting conclusions
Proven ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders across levels, including management and external parties
Proven ability to contribute to the development or improvement of processes, systems, or controls
Proven ability to represent the company as a knowledgeable accounting resource on cross-functional initiatives
Proficiency with standard business and accounting systems and tools
Ability to work independently or collaboratively in a team environment; flexibility to support extended hours or travel as business needs require
