Editorial Designer/Layout Specialist
The Baltimore Sun, Maryland’s largest daily newspaper, is seeking a page designer with good news judgment and knowledge of advertising production. The role involves designing visually engaging news pages, collaborating with editors, and utilizing editorial software to enhance workflow and content placement.

Responsibilities
Design news, feature and sports pages that are visually engaging and emphasize the most important stories of the day
Work closely with topic editors to understand content priorities, reflect them appropriately in layout and apply feedback quickly and accurately
The Sun is the first U.S. daily paper to use Protecmedia editorial software to design a print paper, using AI to create workflow efficiencies and to expand the eNewspaper to satisfy readers’ needs for more news
Plan content placement for both the print edition and the eNewspaper, ensuring a smooth workflow, accurate lineups and consistent visual storytelling across platforms, while making deadlines
Review proofs with a critical eye for editorial accuracy, visual clarity and overall balance
Work with the advertising makeup department to coordinate ad placements in coordination with editorial print production
This role would occasionally fill duties of the page production and layout specialist, paginating all print products to include editorial, advertising and classified pages/elements
Troubleshoot ad issues and resolve them when possible using systems such as Output Systems, Ad order entry, Editorial, Creative Services systems, Layout, and Classified platforms
Job includes night and weekend work
Qualification
Required
Good news judgment and knowledge of advertising production
Design news, feature and sports pages that are visually engaging
Work closely with topic editors to understand content priorities
Proficient in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
Plan content placement for both the print edition and the eNewspaper
Review proofs with a critical eye for editorial accuracy
Improve the quality of display type while making grammar corrections on deadline
Work with the advertising makeup department to coordinate ad placements
Troubleshoot ad issues and resolve them using various systems
Ability to learn new technologies quickly
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite
Comfort working on deadline with shifting priorities
Ability to collaborate with editors while maintaining confidence in layout decisions
Flexible schedule availability, including nights and weekends
Preferred
Bachelor's degree in journalism, graphic design or related field
1–3 years of experience in newspaper or editorial design (internships included)
Familiarity with AP Style and newspaper production workflows
