ENGINEER MECHANICAL 2 - ADVANCED SUBMARINE DESIGN

Responsibilities

Provide technical support for key mechanical systems on the submarine
Develop and mature innovative new design concepts considering functional requirements, future technologies, operational needs, construction and lessons from legacy systems
Develop and review technical calculations, reports, presentations and other products
Coordinate with Navy counterparts and conduct periodic briefs to the Navy and working groups
Travel periodically to naval bases/facilities, vendors, conferences, or other NNS facilities

Required

Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience
Master's Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

Preferred

A technical background with a knowledge of the engineering and design process related to mechanical systems from the concept stage through production and installation
Be innovative, helping to develop and inspire creative solutions to challenging design goals
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to support the presentation of technical reports and briefs to the Navy, and coordinating with vendors and industry partners
An understanding of how mechanical systems interface with structures, electrical, and other mechanical systems
An understanding of an array of mechanical products, such as hydraulic and electric actuators, linkages, pumps and valves, HVAC systems, structural weldments, mechanical joints, and others
Experience in traditional and computer-based methodologies for the design and analysis of components
The ability to work in and help foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture within a diverse set of team members and stakeholders
Exhibit a strong desire for continuous learning and development in a dynamic environment
Operational experience on commissioned or under construction Navy vessels is a plus
