ASTM Laboratory Technician - Hoffman Estates, IL

Responsibilities
Performing chemical tests and analysis of fuel and oil samples by ASTM/ISO and other documented test procedures
Revise internal test procedures as new capabilities are added or existing methods are updated
Participating in internal and external quality and proficiency programs to include sample analysis and preparation of final reports
To devise and apply the methodology for dealing effectively with those special analytical problems for which no published procedures exist
Operates laboratory equipment and instruments such as microscopes, centrifuge, agitators, viscometer, chemical balance scales, spectrophotometer, gas chromatograph, colorimeter, and other equipment
Records test results on standardized forms and writes test reports describing procedures used. Prepares graphs and charts
Cleans and sterilizes laboratory equipment. Calibrates laboratory instruments
Prepares chemical solutions according to standard formulas
Adds chemicals or raw materials to process solutions or products batches to correct or establish formulation required to meet specifications
To adhere to professionalism and to the principles of the scientific method, basing decisions on education, experience, observation, and deduction
Participates and takes an active role in management of the facility and workflow
Assists in monitoring, measuring, and assessing quality assurance practices and protocols for continual improvement
Assists where necessary troubleshooting instrumentation problems, calibrations, and quality assurance practices and protocols
To carry out the above responsibilities, and all others, which may be assigned, in a manner demonstrating support for and adherence to the Company’s Safety Policy and Procedures, Quality Policy and Procedures, Ethics Policy, Environmental Management System, Vision and Strategy, and to exercise good judgment, common sense, and diplomacy in so doing
Qualification
Required
High school diploma or equivalent required
Internships and laboratory experience will be considered
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
Ability to properly interpret technical reports related to chemicals and their properties
Ability to interpret scientific formulas
Must be capable of understanding and following technical procedures
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
The employee is regularly required to stand; use of hands and/or fingers to feel objects, work tools, or controls; talk or hear and smell
For certain analytical tests the ability to see color is required, a color blindness test will be taken to determine the ability to be able to perform some of those tests
The employee frequently is required to walk
The employee is occasionally required to sit; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and with explosive material and is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risks of electrical shock
The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of radiation
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud
