Filoli is a renowned 654-acre historic estate seeking a creative leader for the role of Associate Director of Experiential Creative. This position involves the visual and thematic development of Filoli's largest annual events, translating big ideas into practical designs that enhance guest experiences.

Responsibilities

Develop annual themes, scenic concepts, and atmospheric lighting plots to transform the gardens into a world of autumnal charm and eerie storytelling
Guide the creative strategy for light displays, House theming, tree design, color palettes, and new festive installations
Expand the whimsical visual vocabulary of our miniature village, designing new set pieces, finishes, and immersive details
Shape the creative tone and scenic framing for events like Filoli Pride, themed teas, and pop-up activations that strengthen our year-round identity
Produce early-stage assets, including hand sketches, digital concept art, and mood boards, and translate them into clear, buildable designs (using SketchUp, CAD, or similar tools) for fabrication
Define the color palettes, scenic approaches, material choices, and environmental storytelling for each major experience
Partner with Horticulture and Facilities to seamlessly integrate creative elements into historic spaces and gardens
Serve as the central creative consultant for teams across the estate (Marketing, Events, Retail), ensuring a cohesive visual presentation at every guest touchpoint
Prepare visual packets and renderings for bids, review samples and prototypes, and provide hands-on creative guidance during onsite installation and strike periods

Required

5+ years in experiential design, scenic design, themed entertainment, attractions, or large-scale event production, demonstrated by a strong portfolio of environmental storytelling and placemaking
At least 2 years of direct supervisory experience leading production staff, vendors, or creative teams
High proficiency in creative software: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and at least one spatial/drafting tool (SketchUp, CAD)
Exceptional visualization skills and the ability to operate comfortably between high-level ideation and practical implementation
A flexible, energetic, and decisive nature with proven ability to build partnerships and work diplomatically with diverse internal teams
