The New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs is dedicated to safeguarding individuals with special needs. They are seeking a Legal Assistant 2 to manage case assignments, conduct legal research, and provide operational support to the Case Closure team.
Government Administration
Responsibilities
Independently manages assignment of Case Closure cases, adapting processes to meet shifting priorities
Assigns cases based on risk and timeliness, prioritizing high-risk matters and cases
Managing assignment timing to support department goals
Maintains oversight of case numbers and workflow, communicating issues proactively to leadership
Manages Information Line calls, responding to inquiries and triaging calls to appropriate staff
Conduct legal research
Demonstrates professionalism in handling sensitive information
Co-manages the OGC inquiry mailbox, tracking inquiries and ensuring timely responses
Supports litigation by tracking subpoena requests and communicating with requestors
Serves as a critical operational support to the Case Closure team, enabling effective workflow management
Qualification
Required
Current New York State employee with one year or more permanent, contingent-permanent or 55b/c service as a Legal Assistant 2 and are interested in reassignment
Current New York State employees with one year or more of permanent, contingent-permanent or 55b/c service in a Senior Attorney position and eligible for transfer under section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law
One year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as Legal Assistant 1, SG-14
Three years of full-time experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant
An associate degree (or higher) in paralegal/legal assistant/legal studies program or a certificate in a paralegal/legal assistant program where the degree was granted from a regionally accredited college or university, or one approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) AND one year of experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant
An associate degree in any field where the degree was granted from a regionally accredited college or university, or one approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) AND two years of experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant
Graduation from an accredited (ABA approved) law school with a degree required for NYS Bar will be accepted AND two years of full-time experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant
