Safety & Health Inspector - Syracuse (NY HELPS)
New York State Department of Labor is responsible for providing outstanding services to workers and businesses in New York. They are seeking a Safety & Health Inspector to plan, schedule, and conduct safety and health inspections at various work sites to ensure conformance with established standards and protect workers and the public.

Responsibilities
Plan, schedule, and conduct safety and health inspections of selected work sites such as state, county, city, and town offices
Conduct inspections at places of public assembly, ski areas, carnivals, fairs and amusement parks, explosives magazines, power scaffolds, and other window-washing operations
Assure conformance with established standards
Identify unsafe conditions and work practices
Protect workers and the public
Qualification
Required
Five years of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs
Five years of experience in an apprentice able trade in the manufacturing or construction industries, or active-duty military, or fire protection, which must include responsibility for the enforcement of safety standards and procedures by workers in that trade
Five years of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement
An associate degree can substitute for two years of specialized experience
A bachelor's degree can substitute for four years of experience
A master's degree in a related field can substitute for five years of experience
A doctorate in a related field can substitute for six years of experience
Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education
If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States or its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency
It is essential that you describe your qualifying education and/or experience as completely as possible on your application

This position is designated 55b/c and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility
You must meet the open competitive qualifications from the most recent examination announcement
Current Department of Labor employees only, with at least one year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service in a Safety & Health Inspector
If you have less than one year, you must be reachable on the current Safety & Health Inspector eligible list for this location, if one exists
One year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service as a Salary Grade 14 or higher determined to be similar by Civil Service
This position may require a fingerprint background check prior to appointment
A medical examination will be required prior to appointment, and you are responsible for payment of the clinical laboratory test fee
Appointees to this position may be required to undergo periodic medical examinations to reassess their ability to perform the essential duties of the position
Candidates with no previous state service will begin at the starting rate of the salary range listed above

As this position requires travel, the appointee must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position
Employment at the Department of Labor is contingent upon the maintenance of a valid work authorization and necessary documentation to work legally in the United States
