Seasonal Student Trainee (Laborer)

Responsibilities

Provide labor assistance to maintain buildings, grounds, roads, trails, boardwalks, and otherwise maintain park facilities. May be assigned to clean public restrooms, pick up and haul garbage; pick up litter; maintain campgrounds and associated facilities such as public water and wastewater systems, fire pits, fish cleaning station, picnic areas, etc
Operate equipment such as lawnmowers, various hand tools (such as shovels, rakes, lawn edging equipment, etc.) and various types of power equipment. May operate light pickups, electric carts, small tractors, and other types of vehicles in a variety of traffic and road conditions
Load and upload supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, etc. Move furniture, remove and set signs, perform various painting and minor repair work including some plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work
Identify and correct job safety and health hazards. Follow prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective hearing devices, hard hats, seat belts, steel-toed shoes, respirators, and protective clothing as required by the work being performed

Required

You must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name
Be enrolled in a degree seeking program
Be enrolled on one half (½) time basis
Have a minimum 2.0 grade average
Attending an accredited education institution
Provide transcripts with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking
Be enrolled for the next semester/quarter following the period of this vacancy and provide supporting documentation of such
U.S. Citizenship required
Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication
Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males
Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program
You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required
You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record
You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards
The entire period served under the Intern Program counts as a trial period
Applicants must be at least (1) 18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program
Perform the general laborer duties without more than normal supervision
Possess a good work ethic, dexterity and can perform strenuous work as required by the position
