Senior Engineer (Engineer III) – Natural Gas
Decatur Utilities is responsible for gas, water, and wastewater operations, and they are seeking a Senior Engineer to apply gas utility engineering principles to design and manage gas distribution systems. The role includes project management, regulatory compliance, and mentoring junior engineers.

Responsibilities
Scope of work includes all phases of gas engineering functions but not limited to: system planning/design/layout, modeling and coordination, flow analysis, metering, project management and inspection, compliance and regulatory functions for gas utility systems
Prepares estimates, plans, specifications, work orders, and cost estimates for construction and maintenance of gas system projects
Communicates with customers in person or by telephone to provide service and/or resolve complaints
Reviews plans, specifications, reports, and provides technical assistance for outside consultants, engineers, architects, developers, and other agencies concerning utility improvements
Complies with all federal and state regulatory requirements and meets reporting deadlines on assigned projects. Maintains records for Public Service Commission and monitors PHMSA code compliance and other regulatory requirements
Collects and compiles data, prepares, and presents technical reports and feasibility studies
Uses design software and equipment to perform flow modeling of the gas system
Coordinates interrelated projects with other DU supervisors, engineers, or outside city/state representatives
Assists supervisor with budget development and reports related to short and long-range plans for the gas distribution system
Acts as backup to prepare and submit daily gas purchase nominations
Adheres to all safety policies and codes to ensure safe working practices for employees
Mentors Utility Engineer I & Utility Engineer II positions to enhance growth within the department
Reviews projects for Utility Engineering I & Utility Engineering II positions
Qualification
Required
Bachelor degree (B.S.) in Civil, Mechanical, or related engineering field from an accredited college or university
Minimum of 8 years relevant engineering experience within the gas utility system
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft Outlook, Word & Excel) as required to perform job tasks
Must be able to use specialized software applications for ESRI GIS, customer inquiries, modeling mapping, GPS, and pretreatment
Ability to apply routine and complex mathematical equations to perform various Civil, Environmental and/or Mechanical Engineering tasks, as related to the gas engineering utility field
Ability to read, interpret and comprehend documents such as contracts, industry journals, safety procedures, operating and maintenance instructions, drawings and procedure manuals
Ability to analyze and prepare engineering and technical reports and business correspondence
Ability to interact and effectively communicate with supervisors, customers, co-workers, mid-level representatives of governmental agencies, contractors, developers, product vendors and other professional groups or contacts in the community
Ability to effectively present information to management, public groups and/or Municipal Utilities Board (MUB)
Ability to read, interpret and understand technical standards, permits, Local, State and Federal regulations and codes for utility compliance
Valid Alabama Driver's License; CPR/First Aid Certification; Customer Service Skills and applicable safety training as scheduled
