Assistant Professor Political Science

Salt Lake Community College is Utah’s largest open-access college, educating over 45,000 students across various programs. Responsibilities

Provide effective student-centered instruction and assessment
Alongside department colleagues, build a process of continuous quality improvement for relevant programs
Comply with all college employee policies and procedure
Comply with the Academic Freedom, Professional Responsibility, and Tenure policy
Comply with FERPA policy and other pertinent local, state, and federal regulations
Maintain professional communication etiquette with students
Become a contributing member of the academic unit by engaging in collegial communications and working closely with colleagues and academic supervisors to enhance student success
Maintain a meaningful on-campus presence to enhance community, serve students on campus, and collaborate with colleagues. Campus presence can reflect teaching, professional activities, and/or service as established with your academic supervisor
Create a learning environment focused on student success for each modality taught
In the case of online instruction, facilitate regular and substantive interaction in online courses conducted and observable in the official LMS
Demonstrates the incorporation of active and applied learning in courses taught
Provide appropriate feedback for all assignments that allows students to progress in the course
Be available to meet with students outside of class a minimum of 5 hours/week for student consultation hours
Consistently improve pedagogy, course quality, design, and course integrity in response to course, program, and/or college-wide assessment of student learning
Use appropriate resources and technology in the delivery of courses
Respond to student communication promptly (generally within 1-2 working days)
Stay current in field and maintain necessary credentials, professional skills, and teaching competencies consistent with department standards
Collaborate with colleagues by soliciting feedback
Engage in discipline-specific activities
Expand knowledge of teaching practices to enhance student learning and success
Participate in mentoring relationships, serving as a mentor and/or mentee in the department and college
Participate in mandatory departmental and college professional development
Provide service to the institution through appropriate participation in academic and college committee assignments and departmental and college need
Engage in the student advising process, formally and/or informally as needed
Participate in the formulation and implementation of department initiatives
Mentor and provide formative feedback to adjunct faculty
Serve community partners as content area experts as appropriate

Required

M.S./M.A. in Political Science with an emphasis on American Government from an accredited university
Two years teaching at an institution of higher education (graduate and adjunct teaching applicable)
Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States
All employees are expected to maintain a permanent residence within the State of Utah as a condition of employment
New employees must provide a valid Utah residential address within 30 days of their start date

Competency in Canvas
Effective written and oral communication skills
Knowledge of computer information programs such as Microsoft Office, Adobe, etc

Preferred

Earned Doctorate in Political Science with an emphasis in American Government and Politics
Two years teaching full-time at an institution of higher education (in-person classes)
Two years teaching at a community college (in-person classes)
Experience in designing and teaching courses with innovative high-impact practices, project-based learning, undergraduate research, and community engagement
Demonstrated success in working in settings with students from diverse backgrounds
Experience teaching in other modalities in addition to in-person
