Immigrants' Rights Attorney
The ACLU-VA is seeking an Immigrants' Rights Attorney to join their legal department. This role involves developing and executing litigation and advocacy strategies to advance the rights of immigrants in Virginia, focusing on issues such as mass detention and deportation, while also participating in non-litigation advocacy efforts.

Responsibilities
Developing and executing litigation and legal advocacy strategies
Participating in case selection and development and participating in all phases of litigation
Appearing and arguing in federal court, state court, and before administrative agencies
Seeking out and cultivating relationships with the national ACLU, with other advocacy organizations, and with cooperating attorneys to partner in potential litigation
Monitoring litigation being handled by partner organizations and cooperating attorneys and provide assistance as needed
Providing input on litigation priorities and potential legal advocacy strategies to advance those priorities
Assisting in the implementation of legal program policies, procedures, and systems
Participating in the review and consideration of intakes and other requests for assistance received by the ACLU of Virginia
Developing and conducting, as appropriate, staff training sessions, workshops, continuing legal education events, and other events on specific issues
Developing and maintaining relationships with the legal staff at the national ACLU; with legal services agencies, law firms, and other public interest attorneys in Virginia
Serving as a spokesperson for the ACLU of Virginia on cases and legal issues for the media and speaking at public forums, meetings, and events on various civil liberties and civil rights topics
Writing material for the ACLU of Virginia website and acting as a resource for communications and programmatic staff, and drafting memoranda, reports, public education materials, and legislative advocacy materials
Qualification
Required
Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
Admission to the Virginia State Bar or eligibility for admission within one year of hire
Experience in litigation, including federal and state court experience
Strong commitment to civil liberties and civil rights
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse communities and organizations
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure
Experience with legislative and policy advocacy
Demonstrated ability to engage in public speaking and media relations
Commitment to the mission and values of the ACLU
