Responsibilities

Calculates prescribed radiation dosages for patients undergoing radiation therapy treatments
Calibrates and maintains radiation therapy machines and equipment
Provides consultative service in radiation therapy to departmental personnel
Develops and recommends specific treatment plans for patients with neoplastic disease to attending physicians based on a thorough review and analysis of radiation oncology patient data
Ensures proper calibration of radiation producing machines and equipment
Reviews patient treatment records in order to ensure that the prescribed physical parameters have been executed
Ensures equipment is regularly tested and maintained properly in order to ensure the constancy of radiation delivered to the patient
Participates in the development of techniques or apparatus for planning and treatment delivery
Develops and participates in the departmental radiation safety program, ensures equipment is in compliance with appropriate federal and state radiation safety regulations
Participates in the teaching of lecture and laboratory classes in formal Wayne State University academic programs, including residency training programs
Provides consultation to medical staff of physical aspects of the treatment plan
Participates in clinical research efforts
Provides technical information and advice in the areas of radiologic physics and technology to support staff
Participates in acceptance testing of all new treatment and simulation units
Recommends the acquisition of new equipment or machines based on cost effectiveness data
Participates in the development and/or verification of computer programs used for dosage calculations and mapping
Develops in-service education programs for residents, technologist, and physics students and assistants as needed
Provides personnel training to residents, physicists, and other department personnel
Participates in development of departmental policies and procedures
Provides medical physics consultation to hospital departments
Provides consultation to administration on medical physics issues
Serves as members in departmental, hospital, universities and professional organization’s committees

Required

Master's degree in Radiologic Physics or equivalent
Two years of clinical experience in a similar setting
Board certification Required
Analytical ability to solve complex technical problems, which arise in the calibration and clinical use of the machines
Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain productive working relationship with all levels of hospital personnel
Ability to teach effectively
Knowledge of physics as applied to Radiation Oncology, including understanding of machine operation, instrumentation for measurement and biological effects of radiation
