Senior Spray Technician

Osceola County Government is seeking a Senior Spray Technician to oversee and supervise the operation of spray trucks and equipment used for herbicide application. Responsibilities

Oversees the work of entry level Spray Technicians; supervises routine work in the operation of a spray truck and equipment used to dispense herbicides to control weeds and other undesirable vegetation; assists in the training of entry level personnel
Reads and interprets a variety of instructions, maps, diagrams, or schedules to determine appropriate spraying locations
Attends safety meetings and/or safety inspections
Ensures safe distribution of chemicals and herbicides in designated County areas. Sprays only during appropriate weather conditions to ensure intended, localized and lasting distribution
Operates vehicles and equipment with heightened awareness of pedestrian and traffic conditions, and in accordance with traffic laws, ordinances, and safe driving practices
Ensures proper application and disposal of herbicides and chemicals according to label to achieve maximum coverage of the area while ensuring compliance with all applicable Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), State and County regulations and policies governing the application of pesticides
Cleans and maintains spray truck and equipment; flushes the spray system as necessary
Calibrates spray equipment to ensure proper coverage rates
Inspects trucks and spray equipment for proper operation, mechanical, and/or other problems prior to spraying; reports any mechanical problems
Performs all duties within the framework of pre-established safety policies and procedures
In accordance with prescribed safety policies and environmental procedures; maintains cleanliness of facilities, equipment, and inventory of materials
Performs a variety of routine clerical functions, e.g., completes reports of spraying assignments or activities
Performs duties as assigned/necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position

Required

High School Diploma or GED
One (1) year of experience or a combination of education, certification, training and experience
Must possess a valid Public Applicator License prior to applying for this position
Must obtain Right of Way and Aquatic Pest Control certifications within 60 days of hire
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida's Driver's License
Ability to effectively lead and oversee a staff comprised of entry level employees engaged in herbicide, vegetation control and chemical distribution
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
Ability to lead and carry out assignments with minimal instructions
Ability to adhere to prescribed routines and practices
Ability to foster a team environment by supporting cohesive work relations and providing effective problem resolution
Ability to read and write English
Ability to read and interpret Herbicide labels
Knowledge of office procedures and equipment; knowledge of clerical and secretarial support functions
Knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations pertaining to herbicide, vegetation control, chemical distribution and safety procedures
Knowledge of chemical distribution and their proper storage; ability to adhere to proper safety procedures
Ability to operate light equipment and spray trucks with heightened awareness to pedestrian and traffic conditions
Ability to work independently to carry out assignments to completion; ability to adhere to pre-established safety policies, practices and procedures
Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic
Ability to perform work requiring strength and dexterity; ability to perform work for extended periods of time while standing; ability to withstand exposure to dust, mold and various chemicals
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with management, employees, other departments, officials and the general public; knowledge of the principles and techniques of customer service skills
Ability to operate basic office equipment e.g., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems and facsimile machines
Ability to read, update and maintain various records and files, knowledge of administrative support functions, e.g., records maintenance, data analysis, reports processing and documentation proofing
Physical Demand: Heavy
100 pounds maximum lifting
Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting, carrying up to 50 lbs
Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear
Good eyesight for production or safety of self and others
Physical demand requirements are in excess of medium work
Physical agility in climbing, kneeling, bending, stooping, and reaching
Physical strength and agility sufficient to operate spray equipment over rough terrain
Requires frequent exposure to adverse weather conditions, extreme heat or cold, noise and dust
