2026 Summer Research Internship: Econometric Research on Household Energy Affordability
Resources for the Future (RFF) is seeking a summer research intern to contribute to impactful research aimed at improving environmental and energy decisions. The intern will conduct econometric analysis related to household energy affordability and work closely with RFF Fellows to produce findings for an academic paper.

Responsibilities
Conduct data and econometric analysis related to household energy affordability
Exploring customer-level electricity utility data
Investigating the drivers of non-payment of utility bills and energy-limiting behaviors
Examining the intersection between electricity usage and consumers’ payment of electricity bills
Analyzing the impacts of billing assistance programs for low-income customers
Guiding the direction of the work
Contributing findings to an academic paper
Potentially continuing collaboration with the Fellows on the paper beyond the paid internship
Qualification
Required
Econometrics training or coursework
Strong writing skills
Preferred
Experience working with utility or energy-sector datasets
Familiarity with electricity rates, including how tariffs and rate structures are designed
Experience in computational or statistical programming (e.g., R, Stata, Python)
Experience working with large datasets
