Police Legal Specialist
City of Garland is responsible for filing criminal prosecutions within the Dallas County Court System. The Police Legal Specialist role involves maintaining communication between various law enforcement entities, filing cases, and providing support to the Police Legal Unit.

Responsibilities
Electronically file cases into the County system, ensuring all related and required information is included and ensuring any enhanced cases contain the proper documentation
Act as Liaison between Officers and the District Attorney’s Office to resolve issues with filed cases, to include revisions, changing charges, and dismissing cases as needed
Assist the Magistrate Court with information for arraignment
Interaction with and reporting in the state’s criminal history database
Track cases through the departmental prosecution system and provide information to Officers, the public, and other agencies as required
Coordinate warrant information with the Sheriff’s Office
Process dry writs, expungement orders, and Open Records Requests. This person is responsible for facilitating and ensuring the completion of all adult case sealing requests
Maintain lab results for prosecution by uploading them to the DA’s case system and the Garland Police Department’s prosecution or records management system (RMS)
Copy and notarize case documents
Prepare, enter, create, and maintain monthly reports as needed
Provide backup support to all positions within the unit
Be able to perform the work of any civilian position within the Police Legal Unit and support all positions within the unit as needed for backlogs or training. This may include filing adult cases, helping with expungements, or reading reports for Probable Cause and Quality Control when other staff are on leave
Enter Warrants into RMS and forward to NCIC when provided by a detective
Train temporary and new staff to perform Legal tasks, as assigned
Qualification
Required
High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.)
2 years' administrative experience
Must clear a DPS CJIS Security Policy background
Basic knowledge of the Texas Criminal Law Statutes
Demonstrate ability to prioritize and simultaneously handle a variety of tasks independently
Must be able to work with flexible assignments
Understand written instruction and proceed with said instruction
Ability to utilize and manage Microsoft Windows, Office, and Outlook
In-depth knowledge of all departmental systems and user skills related to RMS, Prosecution, Court Notify, AIS, and the LEA Portal
Must be a self-starter who will see an issue and act to resolve it before being instructed
Valid Class C Texas driver's license
