Responsibilities
Maintain a high-performing engineering culture focused on technical excellence, strong ownership, and inclusion
Partner closely with engineering leaders, platform team peers, and developer stakeholders to translate business priorities and developer feedback into technical strategy and deliverables
Drive the adoption of agile, iterative development processes that consistently deliver high-quality, predictable outcomes
Coach and mentor engineers and other leaders, elevating talent and fostering an environment of continuous learning
Shape and execute on the Service Platform strategy, modernizing our backend service framework and scaling our development tools and workflows to accelerate development across Airbnb
Manage, grow, and inspire a distributed team of engineers working on large-scale systems at the core of Airbnb’s backend developer experience
Leading and managing two high-impact teams — Service Frameworks and Service Tools — ensuring they are aligned, supported, and working cohesively toward shared goals
Driving the technical strategy and roadmap for the Service Platform pillar, making foundational decisions that influence how services are built, tested, deployed, and operated across Airbnb
Collaborating deeply with stakeholders across Developer Platform, Infrastructure, and product engineering to understand needs, influence direction, and ensure that our work accelerates Airbnb’s broader priorities
Mentoring and developing engineers and managers, providing clear feedback, identifying growth opportunities, and elevating the next generation of technical leaders
Cultivating a strong engineering culture centered on collaboration, ownership, empathy for developers, customer-centricity, and continuous improvement
Staying current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices — and thoughtfully integrating them into our frameworks, tools, and long-term strategy
Ensuring operational excellence, raising quality standards, and modeling craftsmanship in how we design systems and deliver platform capabilities
Qualification
Required
A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
Proven engineering leadership experience (ideally 5+ years managing engineers, with at least 2+ years at a manager-of-managers level)
Experience architecting, building, and maintaining highly available services in a large service-oriented architecture (SOA)
Familiarity with patterns, libraries and frameworks for building and testing services, and service-to-service communication
Been actively involved in defining and setting organizational strategies and roadmaps, and deriving measuring goals and success criteria
Excelled at building highly-functional, healthy, inclusive, and collaborative teams
Consistently made culture choices that positively impact all of engineering
