Intake Coordinator, Legal Referral and Information Service (Remote)
The Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) is dedicated to promoting diversity in the legal profession, particularly for the AAPI community. They are seeking a bilingual Intake Coordinator to respond to requests for legal information and assistance, triage legal issues, and provide basic legal information to the public.
Responsibilities
Respond to communications from the general public, usually via email or phone calls
Triage legal issues and direct clients to participating lawyers and other legal resources
Provide basic legal information to the public
Use entry and retrieval database programs to make attorney referrals
Handle other duties, including research, public relations, marketing and public outreach, as assigned
Qualification
Required
Provide fluent communication in written and spoken English and Chinese, either Mandarin or Cantonese, with a strong preference for a candidate who can speak both Mandarin and Cantonese
Exercise excellent customer service, phone manner and written/verbal communication skills while maintaining confidential and sensitive telephone interviews with members of the public needing the assistance of a lawyer or direction to a community resource in New York
Handle referral requests from members of the public requesting assistance via email, in writing and occasionally in person
Screen modest means and pro bono applications for client eligibility based on income and case type
Possess intermediate computer skills
Four-year degree requirement is flexible, as we will also consider candidates who are current undergraduates who have an interest in law or pursuing paralegal studies
Preferred
Experience with the justice system and with social service networks serving New York
Prior experience managing difficult individuals
