Accounting & Financial Research Analyst

The Accounting & Financial Research Analyst will play a key role in strengthening SR1’s financial systems, ensuring accurate and timely accounting, and providing the data and analysis needed to guide strategic decisions.

Responsibilities

Maintain accurate and timely recording of financial transactions in the accounting system
Learn and use MIP Fund Accounting for day-to-day financial transactions, reporting, and fund tracking
Process accounts payable, accounts receivable, and reimbursements in alignment with SR1 policies
Work with external payroll providers to ensure accurate and timely payroll processing, including reconciliation of payroll reports and related journal entries
Assist with payroll-related entries, allocations, and reconciliations as needed
Prepare monthly bank reconciliations and support closing processes
Help maintain an organized and auditable system of financial records
Monitor weekly and monthly cash flow; prepare forecasting models; and advise leadership on potential risks, funding needs, and resource allocation to plan for short-term and long-term planning
Track budgets, expenditures, and reimbursements for multiple grants, contracts, and projects, including facilities and capital-related efforts
Support facilities funding and planning by tracking facility-related costs and helping to model funding scenarios for maintenance, improvements, and new projects
Prepare internal grant/contract reports to program leads and senior leadership
Assist with financial components of proposals, including budget development, cost projections, and matching/leveraging strategies
Coordinate with development/fundraising staff to supply financial information that supports fundraising strategy (e.g., program cost summaries, impact per dollar, sustainability projections)
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and private funder requirements, including documentation of allowable costs and travel/mileage reimbursement policies
Conduct financial research to support SR1’s strategic decision-making (e.g., cost analyses, trend analysis, rate comparisons, long-term sustainability modeling)
Learn and apply nonprofit accounting rules and regulations, including fund accounting concepts, restricted vs. unrestricted funds, and compliance requirements, and apply them in everyday work
Analyze financial data for programs such as OTP, workforce and certification initiatives, agricultural training, health projects, and facilities planning
Provide research and analysis in clear tables, dashboards, and written summaries in layman’s terms when presenting information to non-financial staff, parents/guardians, community partners, and other stakeholders
Research and summarize funding trends, cost structures, and benchmarking data relevant to SR1’s programs and fundraising strategy
Collaborate with program and data teams to align financial reporting with program metrics and outcomes
Prepare financial sections of board reports, funder reports, and internal leadership updates
Support the development of simple tools (spreadsheets, templates, checklists) that make it easier for staff to plan and monitor budgets
Help implement and refine internal financial policies, procedures, and controls
Learn and apply relevant standards and regulatory requirements for nonprofit accounting, including documentation, retention, and reporting expectations
Support preparation for external audits and monitoring visits by gathering schedules, backup documentation, and explanations needed by auditors
Assist in ensuring adherence to SR1’s fiscal policies, procurement standards, travel policies, and cost allocation methods
Provide financial data and cost analysis related to certifications, training programs, and workforce preparation (e.g., fees, tuition, materials, stipends)
Help design simple financial tools and guides that support participants and staff pursuing STEM, workforce, or professional certifications
Partner with program leaders to ensure financial accessibility and sustainability of certification and training initiatives
Work closely with leadership, program directors, facilities planning teams, development/fundraising staff, data teams, and external partners to support SR1’s mission-driven work
Participate in internal planning meetings, helping leadership understand the financial impact of programmatic, facilities, and fundraising decisions
Represent the finance team in a collaborative, solutions-focused way that supports SR1’s culture and values

Required

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business, or a related field
2–5 years of experience in accounting, financial analysis, or a closely related role
Strong understanding of basic accounting principles and financial statements
Willingness to learn and use MIP Fund Accounting software (prior experience a plus but not required)
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets and comfort learning new accounting systems
Experience working with budgets, forecasts, and financial reports
Experience working with payroll processes, preferably including interaction with an external payroll provider
Interest in learning nonprofit and fund accounting rules, regulations, and compliance requirements
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain financial information in plain language to non-financial audiences
Commitment to SR1's mission to serve communities through education, health, agriculture, STEM, and workforce development
Ability to safeguard documents and maintain confidentiality

Preferred

Experience with MIP Fund Accounting or similar nonprofit/fund accounting software
Experience in a nonprofit, school, higher education, or government-funded environment
Familiarity with federal or state grant requirements and guidelines
Experience with cost allocation, multi-program budgeting, multi-site operations, or facilities/capital project budgeting
Knowledge of or interest in place-based projects
