Assistant Director of Military & Veteran Affairs Center

Responsibilities
Manage, coordinate, and assess the day-to-day operations of MVA Center on main campus
Develop, maintain and administer programs, events and outreach, and services at the university to meet the unique needs of military connected students, to include traveling to respective local bases in support of program
Facilitate compliance (federal, state and institutional) and implement policies regarding Veteran Affairs education benefit programs. Meet the needs and interpret the laws of the changing VA Education benefits governing veterans’ education benefits. Ensure staff is knowledgeable in current rules and regulations through staff training and development
Act as a liaison between Department of Veterans Affairs and internal and external agencies to include the Texas Veterans Commission, local military bases, community networks and organizations and other college and university administrators and internal department representatives
Serve as the lead School Certifying Official (SCO), set priorities and deadlines as well as assist with certifying students and submitting tuition and fees in accordance with institutional and VA policies, procedures, and deadlines
Resolve complaints, troubleshoot student problems, advise students and inform them of educational benefits
Manage the preparation and submission of VA reports and documents to regional and state VA offices to include annual program approvals, work study site applications and yellow ribbon participation
Assist in development, revision, and continuous improvement for certification processes, reports, and data collection or services related to veteran programs administered by the university
Advise the Student Veterans of America Chapter, lead the mentor program, and participate in committees or groups across campus to represent military connected students
Collect and evaluate reports on utilization and effectiveness of services offered through the MVA Center
Collaborate with enrollment management to ensure participation in recruitment programs and events, both on and off campus, and other activities designed to recruit, enroll and promote student success. Assist with designing informational brochures and pamphlets for dissemination
Conduct presentations to internal and external stakeholders as requested
Manage activities for assigned staff (SCO and work study) including orientation, training, coaching, performance appraisal and personal and professional development
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's Degree
Five (5) years of professional experience in higher education veterans services, or relevant area
Two (2) years of supervisory experience in this field
Must have a valid driver's license, driving record that is insurable by UIW insurance carrier, and be at least 21 years of age, as required to drive for UIW
Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and institutional regulations governing Veterans Affairs (VA) education benefit programs, including Chapters 30, 31, 33, 35, 1606 and DOD Tuition Assistance policies
Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, or similar systems
Excellent communication skills, verbal, written, and interpersonal
Strong organization skills
Strong problem solving and analytical skills
Ability to effectively work independently and in a team environment
Excellent ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a deadline driven environment
Strong budget management skills
Strong presentation skills
Excellent customer service skills
Ability to travel using personal vehicle to respective MVA offices located at local military bases
Ability to effectively learn internal systems such as Banner and Degree Works
Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA
Preferred
Master's Degree
Higher Education experience in Military and Veteran Services
Experience serving as a School Certifying Official ( SCO ) or working directly with Enrollment Manager
Banner experience
Experience developing programming, outreach initiatives, or events for military-connected students
Experience working with military populations, military culture, or military installations in a professional capacity
