The University of Michigan is seeking a full-time Research Assistant I for the Arctic LTER to process, maintain, and archive long-term ecological data. The role involves working in an analytical lab setting to generate and synthesize data, with potential summer fieldwork at a remote arctic research station.

Qualification
Required
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Information Science, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Data Management, or a related field
Previous experience with data management in a research, laboratory, or field setting, preferably in environmental sciences or related disciplines
Demonstrated experience working with large, complex datasets and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams
Proficiency with data repositories including dataset formatting and uploads
Database management and cloud storage experience – managing, updating, and archiving datasets both online and locally
Version control experience, especially with GitHub; ability to maintain code repositories (R, Quarto, modeling code)
Bibliographic management using Zotero or similar tools
Website maintenance – updating links, content, and basic troubleshooting (experience with content management systems is a bonus)
Familiarity with analytical laboratory instruments (e.g., for water quality analysis)
Statistical and data analysis skills – proficient in R (required for maintaining R scripts), plus experience with creating and processing large chemical/environmental datasets
Experience with dataloggers (Campbell, etc.), radio communication equipment, and automated data collection systems
Knowledge of environmental sample collection, processing, and archiving protocols
Strong ability to train and support colleagues in data management best practices
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to document and synthesize procedures, datasets, metadata, and protocols
Experience attending and contributing to network meetings (example: LTER information manager meetings) and community activities
Exceptional attention to detail for maintaining personnel lists, datasets, bibliographies, and project-specific data
Skilled at managing multiple tasks and priorities (e.g., ongoing data uploads, updating legacy datasets, field and lab support)
Problem-solving abilities; proactive in troubleshooting instrument or data issues
Willingness and ability to travel to remote field stations (Toolik Field Station, Alaska) and work in challenging conditions
Capacity to work both independently and collaboratively within a diverse and geographically distributed team
Commitment to supporting the mission and values of the Arctic-LTER and the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) network
