Quantitative Researcher (Systematic Commodities) — Premier Multi-Strategy Platform
Onyx Alpha Partners is a premier multi-strategy firm seeking a Quantitative Researcher to drive the evolution of systematic commodity trading. The role involves owning the full research lifecycle to develop strategies that capitalize on inefficiencies across energy, metals, and agricultural markets.
Responsibilities
Build Alpha Signals: Research and develop medium-frequency to short-term signals across commodity futures, synthesizing fundamentals, term structure, and flow/inventory data
Refine Execution: Design execution-aware backtests that account for liquidity, slippage, and transaction costs (TCA) to ensure signal integrity from lab to live
Optimize Models: Continuously monitor and recalibrate live strategies through rigorous statistical validation and regime analysis
Drive Data Strategy: Partner with engineering teams to enhance datasets and build robust research pipelines that capture microstructure-level nuances
Qualification
Required
2–8+ years of experience in systematic research (or discretionary with a strong quant edge); primary focus on Commodities, though exceptional researchers from Equities/Futures with intraday experience are considered
PhD or MSc in a quantitative field (Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or Engineering)
Deep statistical intuition regarding term structure, spreads, inventory cycles, and the specific physical dynamics of Energy, Softs, or Metals
Strong proficiency in Python (Pandas/NumPy/SciPy) is required; familiarity with C++, SQL, or kdb+ is a distinct advantage
A clear communicator who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and possesses the rigor to manage the full research cycle
