Production Manager

Responsibilities
Lead team members to ensure production schedules and quality standards are met
Lead, coach and manage performance to obtain area production and quality goals
Identify and resolve production-related issues and champion Six Sigma, Lean, CI, 5S initiatives for area
Ensure team members work in a safe manner and follow all safe work procedures and work instructions
Identify and eliminate unsafe work conditions; ensure timely completion of safety-related corrective actions
Ensure all Safe Work Procedures for their current department are known and adhered to by employees
Meet or exceed departmental safety goals for lost time and recordable incidences
Ensure Company and legal training requirements are met for existing, new hire and transferred team members
Encourage team to bring forward suggestions to improve safety
Complete scheduled safety talks; maintain a clean shop environment
Ensure product leaving department meets or exceeds quality goals as defined by metrics (e.g. DPU)
Ensure timely completion of Corrective Actions in Quality database as assigned
Address all quality issues through appropriate channels
Work with quality department for continuous improvement on quality and procedures for product quality
Process Discrepant Material Tags and Quality Notifications using MRP system in timely, efficient manner
Work with Quality dept. team members to understand supplier problems; verify suspect supplier parts to print, as well as make disposition on rework / scrap components
Make recommendations to supplier on potential process improvements / best practices
Clearly communicate (via phone & email) with vendors regarding non-conforming material
Coordinate return of defective material and replacement stock
Follow-up on clean points from the supplier
Work with Master Scheduling to meet MPS requirements
Schedule people resources to adhere to MPS
Prioritize workflow to ensure internal and external customer satisfaction regarding timeliness of product delivery
Create real time status boards; support monthly ship plans
Allocate people / resources to production times to match standard hours and thus achieve efficiency goals
Manage overtime to meet efficiency and cost targets
Track and target all vendor issues and allocate to proper cost center
Vigorously identify opportunities for cost reduction or efficiency gain
At all times, act in accordance with PRS values
Communicate performance expectations and company and departmental goals to team members
Lead, coach, performance manage direct reports; complete accurate and timely performance reviews
Ensure team follows company policies and procedures and take immediate action on non-compliance
Use timekeeping system and attendance management programs to track and schedule payroll relate information such as regular work hours, vacation, overtime, etc. and respond to any issues
Work on special projects as required as member of plant leadership team
Be an example
Direct and Indirect Reports - hourly: variable, up to 80-100 team members performing one or more of the following: welding, electrical and mechanical assembly, fabrication or painting operations; salary: variable up to 5 supervisors
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in management or other business major, engineering, or related fields. Extensive experience may be substituted for education
Production operations experience in high rate/multi-shift work environment
Ability to solve issues and improve efficiency
Excellent time-management skills, ability to prioritize and manage workload
Computer skills: MS Office Suite, strong in Excel
Thorough understanding and application of lean principles and continuous improvement methodologies
Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, with demonstrated team building and conflict resolution ability
Strength – Position requires lifting of 50lbs. Requires stamina and strength to work in tight and confined spaces while repairing locomotive or locomotive components
Motion – Position requires standing majority of the day. Occasional sitting, frequent walking, climbing of steps and stairs, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; reaching with hands & arms; using hands to finger, handle or feel objects, and tools or controls
Vision/Hearing Requirements – Position is exposed to high levels of noise and vibration from using tools. Specific vision abilities include long & short distance sight, depth perception & focusing. The use of proper PPE is required. The position requires the ability to read QWI and schematics and understand instructions
Work Environment – Position can be located inside or outside, dependent on situation. When inside, the employees are subject to temperature extremes in non-temperature-controlled environments. When outside employees are subject to all weather elements. In both cases, employees will work with oils and other lubricants. The environment requires working in close proximity to moving mechanical parts, mobile equipment, and other machinery
Emotional Demands – Employee is expected to work and cooperate as part of team in order to meet production requirements
Safety – Position is safety sensitive, as it requires working in and around live tracks and operation and repair of heavy equipment. Position requires strict adherence to safety policies (i.e. blue flag) and use of all PPE
