Senior Director, Leaves, Accommodations and Occupational Health

The New York Times is looking for an experienced and strategic Senior Director of Occupational Health to lead our comprehensive health, safety, and compliance programs. You will ensure the well-being of our employees, maintain regulatory adherence, and lead proactive health and safety strategies across the organization.

Responsibilities

Stay current with all occupational health regulatory developments and ensure company-wide compliance with all relevant laws and standards (e.g., ADA, workers' compensation, OSHA, FMLA and state regulations)
Implement health, safety, and compliance programs, including pandemic planning and Industrial Hygiene Service
Oversee the investigation of all accidents and completion of all paperwork required by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) or state regulations
Oversee our self-insured worker's compensation program
Responsible for environmental regulatory compliance, including permitting, inspections, and remediation projects
Oversee the relationship with our on-site medical services provider at our College Point, NY, production facility
Ensure all medical records are maintained in strict compliance with HIPPA and appropriate company procedures
Oversee the administration team who oversees the leaves of absences
Administer requests for accommodation and leaves of absence, ensuring compliance with applicable laws (e.g., ADA, FMLA) and company policies
Facilitate the ADA interactive process for employee accommodations, collaborating with employees, managers, and medical professionals to determine reasonable solutions
Oversee the return-to-work process for employees on leave or accommodation, ensuring a smooth and supportive transition
Maintain accurate and confidential records related to leaves and accommodations
Review all occupational incident reports, ensuring follow-up with all concerned parties to implement corrective actions
Oversee the ergonomic program
Be an important consultant and advisor to our leaders and managers along with our HR and Legal teams, empowering them to meet their responsibility for the health and wellbeing of the NYT employees
Assist the Treasury department in managing our property and casualty programs (e,g, fleet and general liability claims and underwriting)
Manage the College Point facility's Drug and Alcohol testing program and provide training to managers on reasonable suspicion testing requirements and enforcement
Ensure regular safety evaluations of company equipment, facilities, and machinery, and lead safety training for College Point staff
Lead the Occupational Health team, promoting a positive culture
Set clear goals for team members, track progress, and ensure accountability for achieving team goals
Delegate projects and tasks fairly, providing appropriate guidance and direction based on individual capabilities
Conduct performance appraisals and provide regular, constructive feedback to team members to support their growth and ensure performance
Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Required

Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health, Public Health, Environmental Health & Safety, or equivalent experience in a related field
10+ years of progressive experience in occupational health and safety and workers compensation leadership roles in a complex organization
Knowledge of ADA, OSHA, EPA, HIPPA, FMLA and other relevant federal, state, and local health and safety regulations
10+ years experience managing worker's compensation programs, environmental compliance, leaves of absence, and employee accommodation processes
5+ years managing others and training others on Occupational Health Processes
Evaluate and measure best practices

Preferred

Certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), or COHN (Certified Occupational Health Nurse)
Master's degree
