Mechanic – Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician I – Division 7
The N.C. Department of Information Technology is seeking a Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician I to join the Department of Transportation. This role involves performing semi-skilled repairs on small engines, automotive, and heavy equipment, including inspection, service, and diagnosis of mechanical systems.

Responsibilities
Perform semi-skilled small engine, automotive and heavy equipment repair
Performance of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks involving the service, inspection, repair, rebuild and diagnosis of mechanical systems
Determine materials, techniques and tools to accomplish work assignments
Inspect and replace brake pads and shoes
Replace regulators, alternators and belts
Fit or repair standard aftermarket upgrades and equipment
Perform preventative maintenance, tires and tubes, wheels & rims, cranking systems, lighting systems, cooling systems and hydraulic systems
Qualification
Required
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience in the repair and replacement of tires
Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment
Skill in the use of at least 2 tools and pieces of equipment used in the equipment shop such as wrenches, sockets, battery charger, hydraulic jacks, loader, forklift, automotive/truck lift, fuel service truck, tire changer, tire balancer, welder, cutting torch, diagnostic equipment, computer, tire jack, tire balance machine, pneumatic wrench, diagnostic gauges, electronic tester, air impact wrench, air compressor, air gun, torque wrench
Ability to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date
Possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire
Pre-employment drug testing required
Completion of a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing
Safety toe footwear is required
Selected candidate is required to furnish a complete set of tools
