Risk Manager
Beth Israel Lahey Health is a growing health organization dedicated to providing quality patient-centered care. The Risk Manager is responsible for leading the hospital’s Risk Management office, overseeing claims management, and driving a culture of safety and continuous improvement to protect patients and staff.
Responsibilities
Under the guidance of the Director of Quality and Patient Safety and Senior Leadership—and in collaboration with key stakeholders—advance a culture of safety, continuous performance improvement, and high reliability. This includes leading interdisciplinary teams, delivering training, and driving initiatives that strengthen the hospital’s commitment to patient-centered, high-performance care
Oversee the Risk Management Office for BID–Plymouth, including all phases of actual and potential claims management. Identify exposures to loss, analyze organizational impact, and serve as liaison with CRICO, legal counsel, and insurance carriers to minimize organizational risk
Direct and manage the Safety Event Reporting system as a cornerstone of the hospital’s safety program. Ensure timely investigation (within 72 hours) of sentinel events, near misses, and adverse events, with appropriate follow-up and communication to leadership
Lead Root Cause Analyses (RCA)/ Collaborative Case Review (CCR), Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEA), and other performance improvement initiatives to address system vulnerabilities. Develop corrective action plans and drive initiatives that promote high reliability and prevent recurrence
Support providers in disclosure conversations with patients and families. Meet with patients, families, and staff to address concerns with clarity, compassion, and professionalism, fostering positive relationships and constructive resolutions
Collaborate with Nurse Directors, Managers, Medical Staff Officers, and other leaders to track and trend adverse outcomes, medical malpractice claims, and complaint/grievance responses, ensuring timely, respectful, and comprehensive resolution of patient concerns
Design and deliver Risk Management education, including orientation, ongoing training, and targeted programs for staff and physicians. Promote awareness, safety practices, and risk reduction strategies across the organization
Serve as the hospital’s agent for service of legal process, coordinating litigation-related activities such as record requests, interrogatories, depositions, and employee preparation. Provide guidance and counsel to staff involved in legal proceedings
Act as the primary hospital contact for regulatory agencies, including the Massachusetts DPH, the Boards of Registration in Medicine and Nursing, and the Joint Commission. Lead investigations and responses to adverse events, and oversee required reporting of serious events, including Safe Medical Devices Act compliance and equipment recalls
Report regularly to Administration and other governing bodies on the hospital’s risk experience, claims activity, and continuous improvement efforts aimed at optimizing patient care outcomes and organizational resilience
As a core member of the Division of Quality and Patient Safety, contribute to the design and implementation of strategies that build highly reliable clinical systems and continuously improve patient safety outcomes
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare (Nursing or Allied Health)
Current Massachusetts license to practice from MA Board of Registration
At least 2 years of experience in Healthcare Risk Management or Patient Care Management required
Proven ability to function independently and communicate effectively at all levels of an organization required
Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience in fundamentals of performance improvement, patient safety and risk management (Root Cause Analysis, Failure Modes Effects Analysis, Disclosure, basic statistics, run charts, control charts etc.)
Must have strong organizational, analytical and computer technology skills (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Good listening skills
Comfortable in emotionally charged settings with patients, families and / or staff
Experience in conflict resolution
Certification in risk management (CPHRM) or obtained within the first 1 year of employment
Preferred
Risk Manager experience in acute care setting preferred
Database experience preferred
Prior experience in direct responsibility for regulatory affairs and claims management strongly preferred
