Materials & Processes Engineer

Astrion is seeking a Materials & Processes (M&P) Engineer to join our team supporting the Orion Program and other next-generation spacecraft initiatives. In this role, you will support the development, verification, and validation of spaceflight hardware materials, ensuring compliance with NASA standards and contributing to the safety and reliability of intravehicular (IVA) and extravehicular (EVA) systems.

Responsibilities

Provide technical consultation on M&P requirements for space environments (IVA/EVA), including:
Materials selection (metallic and nonmetallic)
Process control and qualification
Corrosion prevention
Electrical bonding
Flammability and toxic off-gassing
Materials specification compliance
Review and contribute to the development of hardware designs, hazard analyses, operations documentation, flight acceptance testing, and anomaly resolution
Develop and implement materials verification and validation plans
Evaluate program and project specifications to ensure accurate inclusion of M&P requirements
Assess engineering drawings and documentation to verify spaceflight compliance
Work with vendors to evaluate manufacturing processes and testing methods
Recommend and define qualification and acceptance testing procedures
Provide support during inspections and manufacturing of human-rated space systems
Represent M&P engineering in program boards, design reviews, and cross-functional working groups
Perform other duties as assigned

Required

Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Engineering, preferably in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, Chemical, or Systems Engineering
Typically 7+ years of experience in Materials & Processes for aerospace applications
Deep knowledge of materials selection, corrosion prevention, electrical bonding, contamination control, and related aerospace-specific processes
Familiarity with both metallic and nonmetallic materials specifications, properties, and testing methods
Ability to assess materials and manufacturing processes across multiple spacecraft systems: propulsion, crew modules, environmental systems, electronics, etc
Skilled in reviewing engineering drawings for materials and process compliance
Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to critically assess designs and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
Proven analytical, problem-solving, and prioritization skills
Must be a US Citizen
Limited travel, as needed

Preferred

Master's or Ph.D. in Engineering
10+ years of M&P experience, particularly on NASA or aerospace flight systems
Background in material selection for electrical components, corrosion and flammability prevention, oxygen compatibility, and process qualification
Experience with human spaceflight system engineering and integration practices
Prior experience leading or coordinating a technical team is highly desirable
Proof of U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Residency may be required
Must be able to pass a U.S. government background investigation
This position may be filled at multiple levels based on candidate experience and business needs
