Assistant Attorney General - Employment Law

The National Legal Aid & Defender Association is seeking an Assistant Attorney General specializing in Employment Law to join the Wisconsin Department of Justice. This role involves providing legal services to various state entities and handling a wide range of civil litigation matters, particularly in employment law.

Responsibilities

Provide a variety of legal services, through counsel and representation, to the Legislature, Governor, state agencies, corporation counsel and district attorneys
Enforce the statutes under the Attorney General’s jurisdiction
Handle a wide variety of matters and litigation on behalf of the State of Wisconsin, its agencies, the University of Wisconsin System, and individual state employees
Serve as defense counsel in practice areas including civil rights, prisoner litigation, workers compensation, eminent domain, medical malpractice, personal injury, public records, employment, and administrative law
Work collaboratively with paralegals, support staff, other Assistant attorneys General, and clients

Required

Candidate must be a member in good standing with the Wisconsin State Bar upon appointment
Conducting in-depth legal research
Analyzing statutes and case law
Writing judicial decisions or briefs as the primary drafter
Oral advocacy in any court or legal presentation experience
Serving as counsel in employment discrimination matters in state or federal trial court

Preferred

Drafting responses to agency charges of employment discrimination
Working with discovery and pre-trial tasks in employment litigation to include some of the following: document review, written discovery, conducting depositions and witness preparation
Drafting summary judgment and other merit filings on employment discrimination matters, including but not limited to: Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; the Rehabilitation Act of 1973; the Americans with Disabilities Act as amended; or the Wisconsin Fair Employment Act
Serving as lead counsel in jury or bench trials
