Apparatus Technician III

Responsibilities
Ability to understand and utilize the latest industry testing and commissioning standards and guidelines such as IEEE and NETA
Provide high level customer service, consistently delivers quality services and maintains highly professional and respectful relationship with clients & Team
Promote efficient flow of information and ensure complete and accurate record keeping
Ability to learn and perform advanced troubleshooting and problem analysis associated with protection and control systems and utility substation equipment, including but not limited to: Application Errors and Omissions, Drawing Errors and Omissions, Wiring Errors and Omissions, Equipment Malfunctions, Questionable Apparatus Test Results, Battery Ground Faults
Provide support in areas of high technical complexity
Participate in project meetings including but not limited to: kickoff meetings, planning meetings, progress meetings, lessons learned meetings
Learn to identify risks and associated mitigation techniques on utility systems and equipment
Adhere to Site Risk Assessment documentation for all high-risk construction and commissioning activities
Learn the processes of circuit isolation and restoration in a manner that ensures no unintended operations of station equipment and protection systems and personnel safety
Prepare detailed daily, weekly, and project completion reports and documentation that includes project progress, issues or problems, recommendations, test results and analyses
Learn proper project drawing management and general housekeeping techniques for onsite safety and performance
Help ensure Working/Field Copy of project drawings updated continuously throughout the project to ensure they accurately reflect the as-left condition of the project at the end of each day
Develop understanding of all applicable tests and/or commissioning activities performed on every piece of equipment or system in accordance with planning and project documents
Ensure all test results are acceptable and permanently recorded, filed and distributed properly. Execute tests and develop detailed test reports of various types of electrical equipment. Review and approve detailed test reports of various types of electrical equipment
Assist other engineers and technicians, as required, during commissioning and startup of systems and equipment
Conduct TRC’s formal walkdown procedure prior to energizing any equipment
Examples of Equipment to be tested - SF6/Oil/Vacuum Breakers, Circuit Switchers, Power Transformers, Capacitor Banks, Bus, CTs, PTs, CCVTs, Wave Traps, Disconnect Switches, Surge Arrestors, Regulators, Reclosers, Cables, DC Battery Banks, Grounding, Generators, Station Service Transformers, AC/DC Panels
Examples of tests to be performed - SF6 Gas, Oil Sampling, Vacuum Bottle Integrity, Core-Ground Test, Insulation Resistance, Winding Resistance, Nitrogen System, Power Factor, Excitation, Sweep Frequency Response Analysis, Turns Ratio, Polarity, Dielectric Withstand, Motion Analysis, Operating Mechanism Inspection, Contact Resistance, Capacitance, Inductance, Impedance, Disconnect Jaw and Blade Alignment, Battery Strap and Cell Resistance/Specific Gravity/Load Tests
Qualification
Required
Education and/or Experience - Associate Degree in a technical field, or equivalent training and experience, which may include Journeyman Apprentice Electrician Training, US Army Prime Power School, US Navy Nuclear Electrician Program, NETA Level 3 or 4 Certification, et. al
Ability to work cooperatively with others in a team environment while maintaining a high level of initiative and self-motivation
Beginning level knowledge of electrical systems; solid understanding of AC and DC schematics, wiring and interconnect drawings, one line and three-line diagrams
Analyze and effectively utilize drawings in the commissioning and/or testing process
Ability to learn test equipment specific software to accurately conduct and document test activities
Availability: Must be available for out-of-town travel of up to several weeks at a time and be available to work flexible hours, including weekends, overtime holidays and night work
Must have excellent verbal and written skills and be able to communicate and negotiate effectively
Must have good PC skills and experience with Adobe and Microsoft programs
U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent resident status required
Valid USA driver's license issued by state of residence and in good standing
Ability to operate a Man-lift, or willingness to be certified
Physical Demands include ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds of test equipment routinely. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job
