Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Lab Information Manager)

The Chillicothe VA Medical Center is seeking a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Lab Information Manager) to develop and recommend policies for the laboratory information system. Responsibilities

Maintains current knowledge of all laboratory related accreditation and regulatory requirements and other applicable guidelines and directives published by higher command authority, the College of American Pathologist, the Food and Drug Administration, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Administration, the Occupational Safety and health Administration and other agencies and organizations
Develops or assists others in developing laboratory quality improvement (QI) projects and evaluations studies
Assists with preparation for laboratory inspections by reviewing current operations against the checklists for each section to ensure that requirements are met. Assists in developing and implementing corrective actions when deficiencies are identified
Monitors the progress of ongoing QI projects. Posts/displays status of on-going projects for review by all departmental personnel
Aids on the preparation and revision of SOPs for each section of the lab and coordinates effort to validate a new/revised SOP when a request is received from laboratory management personnel
Acts as a computer resource person for laboratory staff and aids them in evaluation and solving problem, implementing new methods, or modifying existing methods
Analyzes emerging trends, software, and technology and adopts appropriate methods for local programs to meet agency goals
Serves as the local expert for national software developers for alpha or beta testing of software packages
Maintains knowledge of laboratory operations and their relationship to the organization sufficient to provide advisory, inspection, training, and problem-solving services on specific projects, programs, or functions

Required

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Education: A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university
Certification: Must have one of the following certifications: Generalist certification as an MLS given by ASCP BOC or AMT, Generalist certification as an MT given by ASCP BOR or AMT, Categorical certification or Specialist certification by ASCP or AMT
English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7403 (f)
To qualify for GS-12: You must have one year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist
Knowledge of concepts, principles, and methodology of clinical laboratory technology in relation to laboratory information systems
Knowledge of laboratory operations and their relationship to the organization
Knowledge of laboratory computer systems sufficient to implement various laboratory associated packages and sustain operation of the laboratory system
Knowledge of compliance and regulatory requirements for laboratory functions
Ability to adapt, implement and integrate the use of software to specific laboratory applications and processes, including the use of office automation software
Ability to independently plan, organize, set priorities, work as a team member, and effectively complete assignments
