Responsibilities

Responsible for driving strategic plans and initiatives forward on behalf of the laboratory, lead special projects and priorities from both a communications perspective and an institutional leadership perspective as needed; lead cross-functional/cross-lab teams; represent the laboratory in key stakeholder interactions

Responsible for the leadership of the Strategic Communications and External Affairs Directorate, with oversight of full-time staff, contract personnel, casuals, and volunteers from across the laboratory. The incumbent should delegate authority and responsibility clearly to staff and others as appropriate

Lead and execute special projects of institutional significance (long-range planning, key leadership hires, crisis response, etc.), navigating complexity of both the federal government and university contexts

Inform and articulate lab strategy and critical high-level messages for key internal and external stakeholders

Develop key messages and strategies to communicate complex information to multiple audiences and constituencies through a wide variety of communications platforms, including digital, print, social and media

Lead, advise and inform culture and change management strategy and implementation, in particular around long-term high-consequence institutional matters (safety, organizational change, respectful workplace, etc.)

Engage and connect with other DOE National Laboratory communicators to provide leadership and ensure consistent and complementary strategic plans with overall Lab outreach and communications

Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve communication goals supporting SLAC¿ mission vision, and values. Responsible for hiring and retaining staff and personal development for direct reports. Accountable for the performance of employees and the directorate

Oversee crisis communication response including emergency matters as well as issues with reputational impact and training communication leads

Required

Bachelor's degree and twelve years plus of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience

Experience advising senior management on complex communications issues

Strong understanding of reputational risk and issues management

Depth of experience, sound judgement, and confidence befitting a senior strategic leadership position

Proven ability to manage large and complex issues through diverse and competing interests

Exceptional communications skills and presence at all levels and for all audiences

Demonstrated excellent influencing, negotiating, and relationship management skills

Demonstrated ability to earn credibility and influence senior leadership

Exceptional ability to manage, message, edit, analyze and synthesize complex material

High degree of personal initiative; outstanding interpersonal, verbal, written communications; team building, negotiation, and process facilitation skills

Exceptional leadership and management skills and the ability to build and sustain a best-in-class communications ecosystem

Preferred

Experience with a lead communications role in institutions with a large, diverse R&D portfolio or academic setting
