Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) Advocate (Part-Time)

NEOGOV is seeking an Adult Education & Literacy Advocate to work with community partners and support adult education students. The role involves recruiting new students, assisting them in overcoming barriers to success, and maintaining follow-up contact with students.

Responsibilities

Provide support to students that have non-academic barriers that lead to absenteeism and dropout
Establish relationships with local Job Centers and Workforce Development Boards
Enter into community partnerships that support AEL students in the attainment of services that lead to employment and/or post-secondary education and training
Meet as needed with students identified as being college and career ready to assist them in developing a post-secondary action plan that addresses barriers and identifies support services
Provide direct assistance to students who are identified as college or career ready by referring to the job center
Provide indirect assistance to students and advance future student recruitment by developing relationships at community events and job fairs
Participate in professional growth activities
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the AEL Program, the Dean of Workforce Development and Technical Education or as designated by the President

Required

Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent (equivalency is a plus)
Strong interpersonal communication skills
Experience working effectively with and understanding the needs of diverse populations
Ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity
1-3 years relevant experience in building and maintaining positive community partnerships
Possess organization, problem solving, and effective oral and written communication skills
Ability to be a creative thinker and self-starter
Availability for flexible work schedule, including some evenings, weekends, and summer hours
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, families, and community agencies
Access to reliable transportation to travel between school, community organizations, and employers

Preferred

Associate or Bachelor's Degree
Knowledge of Columbia community resources
Experience assisting adults in lifelong learning
