Responsibilities

Designs, fabricates, installs, repairs and provides preventative maintenance activities for traffic control devices, including, but not limited to: construction signs, barricades, regulatory signs, warning signs, guide signs, school areas, grade crossings and pavement markings
Performs work zone layout, set up and places guide markers for painting street markings and installs pavement markings such as crosswalks, street symbols, lane lines, parking lot and curb lines. Performs pre-and post-trip inspections on equipment
Implements sign and markings work orders
Installs and operates traffic counters and performs manual traffic counts
Schedules underground utility locates
Assists with training of temporary personnel
Shares after hours on-call duty on a rotating schedule. Responds to after-hours calls for service and performs emergency and after-hours operations
May operate sweepers, loaders, dump trucks and participate in roadway maintenance
May perform traffic asset locates
May schedule underground utility locates and coordination of electrical and fiber asset locates
This position is part of the Town’s snow removal program. Will have scheduled on-call responsibilities through the winter months to remove snow using a 4-wheel drive pickup and/or heavy equipment. Snow removal shifts are typically 12 hours

Required

High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Twelve (12) months of field experience with traffic control devices; or an equivalent combination of education, training, or experience for Signs & Markings Technician I
Three (3) years of field experience with traffic control devices; or an equivalent combination of education, training, or experience for Signs & Markings Technician II
Valid Driver's license; a Class B Commercial Driver's License is preferred or the ability to obtain within six (6) months from date of hire
Level I Signs & Markings certification through I.M.S.A. required, or ability to obtain within one year of hire, as coursework and testing is made available
American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) Traffic Control Technician required; or ability to obtain within 1 year
Some knowledge or ability to obtain of the MUTCD manual is required
Familiarity and ability to learn how to properly and safely operate and use tools and equipment that require a high degree of dexterity, the use of protective equipment and exposure to machinery and its moving parts
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
Ability to distinguish between shades of colors and to visually inspect sites
Ability to work a rotating on-call schedule which requires after hours' response
Ability to work effectively and complete and assign tasks in a timely manner
Ability to perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks in repair, maintenance, installation of all traffic control devices
Ability to drive a vehicle and to operate trucks and equipment safely
Ability to follow written and oral directions
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships
Moderate to heavy physical work to include lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of up to 75 pounds
Frequent performance of activities requiring a full range of body movement including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling/bending, crouching, crawling, and/or twisting
Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate tools and electrical equipment as well as for driving equipment and vehicles
Vision for reading, recording and interpreting information
Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens
Ability to perform activities that require considerable muscular exertion and/or physical strain, as well as continuous mental and/or visual demand where the flow of work is repetitive or duties are diverse and/or hazardous and requires continuous alertness and/or activity
Works both indoors in the shop and outdoors to perform duties, potentially in any weather and environmental conditions, including possible exposure to extreme weather conditions, dust, dirt, heat, cold, fumes, gases, odors, noise, wetness and humidity
Must satisfactorily complete a criminal background and driving record check prior to commencing employment
