Responsibilities

Establishes and maintains an appropriate classroom setting through the use of effective classroom management skills and engagement strategies specific to student need to include progressive discipline, progressive skills, and interventions for behavior and academics
Assesses new and continuing students using multiple assessment methods and collecting multiple pieces of evidence of learning that include progress monitoring and standards based education with appropriate rigor and to reflect reading and writing tasks
Prepares daily and unit lesson plans that are aligned with state standards, DYS power standards, and the critical skills needed and/or the CCSS content standards. Must document and submit digitally
Implements a variety of research-based education strategies (including technology) to accommodate multi-age/multi-level students to include project based learning and skills orientated focus
Ensures that the DYS instructional framework is followed with daily learning objectives and relevant learning that is scaffolded to meet the needs of all youth. This includes implementing interventions, IEP accommodations and modifications, IGCP goals, and behavioral plans with fidelity
Must utilize curriculum which is personally designed or prescribed
Ensures educational records are in IC and/or Trails while meeting deadlines to include daily attendance and weekly grades based on academics
Selects behavior and classroom management techniques to apply within the framework of DYS. Ensuring effective accommodations are followed for special education students while also communicating growth and data needed for progress monitoring
Uses these skills for subbing in other classrooms as required; assures if a substitute is needed for classroom, robust lessons are left and timely
Meets informally and in scheduled meetings with the Central Education Office members, principal, treatment providers and other teachers to review student and school progress; this may include MDT meetings, IEP meetings, or BID meetings as determined by leadership
Develop comprehensive plans for implementation of the subject matter and student goals in alignment with school development plans, expressed processes and expectations, and DYS quality standards
Participate in professional and staff safety development and apply learning accordingly. Assure appropriate boundaries and effective presentation in the classroom and work place while monitoring professionalism
Use data effectively and with MTSS processes, progress monitoring, educational advocacy, and multidisciplinary team meetings (MDT)
Monthly reviews of progress/classroom to principal to include grades, progress, content
Assist in the safety and security of the school and facility by supervising residents as needed and providing immediate assistance as necessary within the facility
Consistently knowing and following policy and procedures of the Division of Youth Services and the facility to include safety procedures for classrooms and youth
Adhere to the trauma-informed culture and expectations. Know and use Motivational Interviewing, Sanctuary Model to include small group processes and Restorative Justice language and frameworks; documentation of processes as required
Adhere to the Code of Conduct and perform duties with professionalism and within expectations. Follow leave procedures

Required

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in education or a field of study related to the work assignment
A current, valid Initial or Professional Teacher license issued by the Colorado Department of Education
Must be 21 years old or older
Must pass a Colorado Bureau of Investigations and a Federal Bureau of Investigations full background check as a condition of employment
This position requires State of Colorado residency at the time of application and residency within the state throughout the duration of employment in this position
Must possess a valid, non-restricted Colorado Driver's License or a non-restricted U.S. Driver's License for positions within 30 miles of the CO state border
Able to pass Escape and Evade training
Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of the DYS Pre-service Training Academy, Field Training Program (FTO) and mandatory annual training in all subject areas
Annual Flu vaccination required
The Diana Screen®, a sexual risk screening tool, is administered to all applicants to the Division of Youth Services (DYS) seeking positions of trust with children and teens

Preferred

Dual endorsements or documentation of ability to be Highly Qualified in multiple content areas
Endorsement in English
Experience working with at-risk or adjudicated youth
Experience with differentiated instruction; developing lessons/curriculum and providing differentiated instruction
Proficient use of assessment data to inform instructional practice
Relevant years of state service experience
