Cabrini | Staff Attorney - UC

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is seeking a Staff Attorney for their Unaccompanied Children Program to provide direct legal representation in immigration matters. The role involves legal assistance, case management, community outreach, and supervision of legal staff, ensuring compliance with contract requirements and participation in community education efforts.

Responsibilities

Provide legal assistance and direct representation to immigrant clients before the USCIS, Asylum Office or Immigration Court on matters such as family petition, removal of conditional status, adjustment of status, naturalization, asylum, removal defense and any immigration proceedings
Maintain client physical and electronic files according to program requirements, including case notes, correspondence, filings, calendars, and dockets
Attendance and participation is mandatory in team meetings, Cabrini staff meetings, and other agency meetings
Comply with all contract requirements
Participate in Charlas by presenting and performing legal consultations
Provide supervision and direction to Legal Assistant, Paralegal and/or interns on a full range of legal services provided by the program
Perform other duties as assigned by the Legal Director and Managing Attorneys such as assisting with in house meetings and trainings

Doctor of JurisprudenceLicensed by Supreme Court of TexasBilingual in SpanishEnglishLegal research skillsLegal writing skillsCommunication skillsNegotiation skillsHigh-volume caseload managementBasic typing skillsComputer applications proficiencyMulti-cultural sensitivityImmigrant communityConfidential information handling

Required

Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) degree from an ABA accredited law school
Licensed by the Supreme Court of Texas and membership in the State Bar of Texas; or take the earliest available bar exam and obtain license no later than one (1) year of employment date
Bilingual in Spanish in English

Preferred

Excellent legal research and legal writing skills
Excellent verbal and written communication and negotiation skills
Ability to handle a high-volume caseload, multiple deadlines, and other tasks simultaneously
Knowledge and proficiency in basic typing skills and computer applications such as MS Office
Demonstrated multi-cultural skills and sensitivity
Ability to handle and maintain confidential information
Experience working with low-income immigrant community
