Responsibilities

Places equipment and supplies in operating room and arranges instruments according to instructions

Assists team members to place and position patient on table

Scrubs arms and hands and dons gown and gloves, and aids team to don gowns and gloves

Maintains supply of fluids, such as sterile saline, sterile water, etc

Hands instruments and supplies to surgeon, holds retractors, cuts sutures, and performs other tasks as directed by surgeon during operation

Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes

Utilizing running or interrupted sutures with absorbable or non-absorbable material of wound layers, including muscle and fascia

Utilizing subcuticular closure technique with or without adhesive skin closure strips

Closing skin with method per surgeon’s directive (suture, staples, etc.)

Postoperative subcutaneous injection of local anesthetic per surgeon’s directive

Selecting and applying appropriate wound dressings, including the following

Liquid or spray occlusive materials

Absorbent material affixed with tape or circumferential wrapping

Immobilizing dressing (soft or rigid)

Providing assistance in securing drainage systems to tissue

Inventories and orders medical supplies and materials

Washes and sterilizes equipment and cleans operating room
