Ophthalmic Tech (part time) - IMMC (Chicago)

Responsibilities

Obtains and analyzes patient history
Conducts patient follow-up examinations
Instructs patients in Refractive testing and procedures
Provides medical evaluation
Explains eye medications and ocular procedures to patients or refers to appropriate professional staff member as requires
Observes and evaluates patient’s reaction to medication and treatment. Reports untoward or significant reactions to professional staff
Develops and implements service specific operational protocols that promote service efficiency and teamwork
Provides direct patient care on assigned services
Serves in a liaison or triage capacity between the physician and patient to answer questions, coordinate care or provide patient education
Assists surgeon in Refractive surgery
Performs preliminary screening examinations for physician review including, but not limited to: A-Scan, Topography, Retinoscopy, Refractions, Slit lamp examinations, Cell Count, OCT (Anterior Chamber, KCN)
Measures acuity of patient, with and without glasses, for distance and near vision
Obtain topographical measurements of the eye to include corneal diameter and curvature
Examines cornea, lens and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and notes variation from normal
Dilates patient’s pupils as required by protocol with Mydriacyl 1% an Neo-Synephrine 2.5% eye drops
Checks motility & confrontational field
Prepares exam room and patient for exam and treatment
Explains pre- and post-operative instructions of procedures, limitations and medications
Handles medically related telephone calls as directed by physician
Reviews charts prior to surgery to assure surgical compliance
Performs additional tests, if necessary
Calibrates and maintains all ophthalmic equipment and instruments according to protocol
Provides adequate supplies to perform tests and sets up instruments for ophthalmic procedures and examinations and maintains and orders supplies according to protocol
Performs all necessary safety procedures, which includes sterilization of instruments
Provide support to physicians during eye procedures/surgeries that include: Optiwave Refractive Analysis (ORA), Verion Image Guided System, Cell Count, Intralase/Intacs, etc
Directs flow of patients examined by a Vision Correction Center surgeon
Instill pre-operative eye drops, and instill eye drops after surgery. The eye drops might include but are not limited to: Proparacaine, Tetravisc, Vigamox, Prednisolone, Ceulluvisc
Assists in answering phones, filling out forms, etc as required
Answers telephone inquiries regarding Refractive Surgery
Screens patients and telephone calls from patients and referring physicians to determine appropriate line of action
Explains diagnostic procedures and Refractive surgery
Performs data entry in medical charts and computer
Coordinates pre-operative and surgical appointments
Orders supplies according to protocol
Ensures that patient preparation and paperwork is complete for pre-operative patients as required by surgery
Ensures exam rooms are stocked daily
Ensures confidentiality of all records and information related to patients, physicians, employees, Vision Correction Center and in related interests
Complies with safety policies and according to applicable regulations

Required

Associates degree or an equivalent 2 - 3 years of clinical experience in a specialty-based ophthalmology practice
Must be certified on all LASIK equipment, including ability to provide consultation and pre-operative workups, LASER operation and LASER room scrubbing within 90 days of hire
Excellent communication skills
History taking and documentation skills
Medical Terminology and Knowledge
Competency on all equipment associated with Refractive Surgery and general ophthalmology
Able to perform refractions
Allegretto and IntraLase certification within 90 days of hire
Current CPR certification
Ability to lift to 35 pounds without assistance
Ability to handle stressful situations
Able to maintain a positive attitude
Demonstrates tact and good judgement
Mature, highly motivated, decisive and flexible
