Responsibilities

Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture to collect blood samples from patients of all ages
Verify patient identity and ensure proper labeling of collected samples
Follow standard procedures for blood collection to minimize discomfort and risk to patients
Utilize proper techniques to handle and dispose of needles and other sharps safely
Explain blood collection procedures to patients and address any questions or concerns they may have
Provide a high level of patient care and comfort throughout the blood draw process
Monitor patients for adverse reactions and provide first aid or alert medical staff if necessary
Ensure proper storage and transportation of blood samples to the laboratory
Document blood collection and processing accurately in patient records
Perform basic testing on blood samples as required, such as blood glucose levels
Follow protocols for specimen handling to maintain sample integrity
Maintain accurate records of blood draws and sample deliveries
Manage inventory of phlebotomy supplies and order new supplies as needed
Schedule appointments and manage patient flow to ensure efficient operations
Update and verify patient information in electronic health records (EHR) systems
Adhere to all health and safety guidelines, including OSHA regulations
Follow infection control protocols and maintain a clean and organized workspace
Ensure proper disposal of biohazard materials and comply with waste management procedures
Stay updated with the latest phlebotomy techniques and best practices through continuing education
Participate in training sessions and staff meetings to maintain high standards of care

Required

High school diploma or equivalent
Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program
Proficiency in venipuncture and capillary blood collection techniques
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work efficiently and accurately under pressure
Attention to detail and organizational skills
Familiarity with phlebotomy equipment and electronic health records (EHR) systems
Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks
Manual dexterity and coordination to handle phlebotomy equipment
Capacity to manage patients of varying ages and health conditions with care and empathy

Preferred

Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) or equivalent is preferred and may be required based on state regulations
Previous experience as a phlebotomist or in a similar role is preferred but not mandatory for entry-level positions
