Assistant Attorney General I, Tobacco Enforcement Section
The Virginia Office of the Attorney General is seeking an Assistant Attorney General I for the Tobacco Enforcement Section. This role involves enforcing the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement and related laws, collaborating with various agencies, and handling both civil and criminal litigation matters.
Law Practice
Responsibilities
Work as part of a team with investigators, auditors, attorneys, and support staff to enforce the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement, the Virginia Tobacco Escrow Statute, and related tobacco laws
Appear in the appropriate state or federal courts when required on both civil and criminal matters
Collaborate with other states, the National Association of Attorneys General, the Virginia Department of Taxation, as well as law enforcement agencies on tobacco related issues
Execute the annual tobacco manufacturer certification program
Make tax and escrow-related calculations and facilitate escrow deposits from certain manufacturers
Litigate enforcement actions against non-compliant manufacturers
Monitor licensed stamping agent compliance with state laws and litigate to enforce such compliance
Draft opinions, respond to citizen and industry inquiries, and review legislation
Other duties as necessary or appropriate may also be assigned
Some overnight travel may be required
Qualification
Required
Successful candidate must be admitted to the Virginia State Bar
This position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills
Candidate will demonstrate proficiency in time management
Ability to handle multiple concurrent tasks
Strong planning and organizational skills
Ability to work independently and as a team member
Ability to organize and analyze large quantities of information
