Responsibilities

Interprets lectures, discussions, announcements, conversations, meetings, events, and other spoken word situations using manual sign system appropriate for the language and the cultural background of deaf/hard of hearing students and staff
Recognizes and adjusts interpretive language to match the student’s preferred language and language mode to ensure that the student comprehends the interpretation
Interprets deaf/hard of hearing students’ signs into fluent English for other students, faculty, and college staff
Works with faculty and college departments to gain understanding of relevant course concepts to better facilitate translation for deaf/hard of hearing students
Provides information and orientation to deaf/hard of hearing students in emergency situations
Works effectively in teams with other sign language interpreters
Utilizes technologies to transcribe speech to text in classroom and other settings
Performs other duties as assigned

Required

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study
Completion of an accredited interpreter training program
Three years experience as a sign language interpreter including experience in a post-secondary educational setting
Certification by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), or certification by the National Association for the Deaf (NAD) or an equivalent certification
Understanding of American Sign Language or other sign system used by student and technical signs or specialized vocabulary used in the courses to which the incumbent is assigned
Understanding of deaf culture, deaf community, and resources available to the deaf
Understanding of the challenges and issues that face students with deafness and hearing impairment
Understanding of and skill in using proper English, including vocabulary and grammar
Familiarity with the Code of Ethics of the National Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf or the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
Familiarity with specialized equipment for the deaf and hard of hearing (such as TTY/VP)
Proficiency in interpreting spoken language to sign language and interpreting sign to spoken language for lectures, classes, labs, meetings and various assignments
Skill in conveying the different registers of the speaker, e.g. degree of formality, range of emotion, directness, and discourse markers which indicates the comment is an aside or a sidebar to the main conversation
Skill in recognizing when communication provided by the interpreter is or is not clearly understood by the student and is utilizing appropriate signs from already known signs to promote the understanding of concepts and words found in an academic setting
Skill in researching for signs that are needed for the academic area
Knowledge of position requirements
Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws
Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems
Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts
Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently
