Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist

Responsibilities
Implements & coordinates radiation protection standards, devices, and techniques, including concepts of accumulated dosage, dose monitoring and genetic changes with team members
Coordinates a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative to effectively diagnose patients by using a wide variety of complex imaging exams
Capable of positioning of patients for a wide variety of highly complex imaging (Fluoroscopy, MRI, & CT) studies
Evaluates and adapts quality management procedures and processes as needed
Demonstrates understanding of VA and other national guidelines pertaining to department operations, including database security
Maintains accurate records, as required by management for quality assurance and quality control purposes in their assigned modality areas
Utilizes advanced imaging software that supports complex imaging programs and makes multiple simultaneous settings and adjustments in operation of specialized equipment to ensure accurate results
Understands specific regulatory processes, VA standards regarding radiology quality assurance and other technical functions
Recognizes changes in equipment and procedures that might result in increased exposures and recommends methods to prevent increased exposures
Performs and monitors safety checks on patients, employees, and visitors to comply with FDA safety standards regarding ferrous objects and cardiac pacemakers prior to those persons entering the environment of the 5 Gauss Magnetic Field
Reviews medical records, interviews patients and communicates with onsite or offsite Radiologist(s) to determine medical appropriateness of requested examination
Positions and images the patient, prepares the processed media for interpretation by a Radiologist and assures images are properly identified with patient demographics and verifies the archiving on the Picture Archiving Computer System (PACS)
Obtains other pertinent diagnostic examinations (CT, MRI, & X-Rays.) for the Radiologist which may be necessary for correlation between the performed exam and the clinical history
Advises Radiologist(s) and or Radiologist Physician Assistant of significant abnormalities that require their immediate attention and/or visualization while the patient is undergoing examination
Follows established Quality Assurance (QA) guidelines and protocols to ensure integrity, availability, authenticity, and confidentiality of imaging data transmitted by the various areas and duties
Identifies patient properly through the Radiology Information System (RIS) interface identifier
Cleans and maintains equipment in the manner outlined in the Reusable Medical Equipment Policy and according to specific Standard Operating Procedures
Develops and maintains patient prep procedures for multiple modality areas so that outpatients and inpatient units understand proper preparations for exams
Reviews and monitors work of Diagnostic Radiology, MRI & CT Technologists are being done appropriately and workload is being dispersed amongst all Technologist Staff
Assist Diagnostic Radiology and MRI Supervisor with planning, developing, and directing the operations of multiple modality areas. This involves providing clinical coverage for Interoperative cases, Fluoroscopic studies, Diagnostic X-Ray's, Anesthesia Pain, GI lab, MRI, and CT Cases
Directs the work of Diagnostic Radiology and MRI Technologist staff, assists with clinical duties in CT and reports findings and or issues directly to the modality area Supervisors
Triages work according to emergency needs with an ability to multitask efficiently in a high-volume service
Notifies Supervisors and Biomedical Team of any quality and or compliance issues with equipment. Reports and or addresses the issues that are identified timely
Assists Supervisors with employee training and any new competencies. Ensures that all competency information is appropriately documented. Works with Supervisor to ensures that all employee's mandatory education is completed on time and properly documented
Provides back-up coverage for the Diagnostic, and MRI Supervisors during absences. This may include attending meetings in the absence of the modality Supervisor

English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d)
Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable
Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE)
Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level
Preferred
ARRT certification with a minimum of 8 years MRI experience
ARRT certification with a minimum of 8 years General X-Ray experience
ARRT certification with a minimum of 2 years CT experience
