911 Radio System Engineer

Responsibilities
Provides data, systems, hardware, and/or software support for a City department; work involves managing specialized databases and systems including creating, maintaining, and updating scripts, creating maps and maintaining map layers, and digitizing, extracting, editing, and updating data; installs software patches and upgrades; tests and troubleshoots system, server, database, and/or equipment issues; processes calls; and responds to data and/or user requests
Prepares, maintains, reviews, and/or submits technical, project, and other reports, records, user guides, and other documents; reviews contracts, agreements, permits, engineering drawings and plans; updates and maintains databases and online systems; compiles queries, and reconciles data; reviews work for accuracy, completeness and compliance with specifications, requirements, regulations, policies, and procedures
Coordinates with City departments, and/or external agencies; provides technical assistance at formal meetings; assists with planning and process improvements; and may conduct training, as assigned
Maintaining a database of emergency calls and responding to requests including, ensuring calls are appropriately routed; reviewing and processing calls for court cases; attending court to authenticate records; approving/denying street names for new construction; reviewing address problems as they relate to 911 calls and responding to emergency communication staff needs
Responsible for the daily operation of the City of Durham 800 MHz P25 Trunked Radio System and other assigned electronic systems which facilitate public safety and local government communications
Provide troubleshooting, repair, and preventative maintenance of software and hardware including system controller servers, routers, switches, transmitters, receivers, channel banks, and microwave equipment
Coordinate with vendors regarding system upgrades and maintenance contracts. Perform inspections to ensure compliance with Federal Communications Commission, Federal Aviation Administration, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations
Provide emergency on-call radio service on a rotating schedule for after-hours support
Qualification
Required
Associate's degree or equivalent in computer science, information technology, or directly related field
Three years of related technology support experience
Preferred
General Radio Operators License is preferred
Prior Information Technology (IT) experience preferred
Experience with an 800 MHz radios system preferred
